Week 153 – February 1st, 2014

For the eight consecutive weeks Emma is singing about that love isn’t enough at the top of my chart. “L’amore non mi basta” (#1) is now the 2nd most successful song leading the chart. Only “Receive” by Alanis Morissette stayed longer at #1, but after eight weeks this song had a break of four weeks before it reached week 9 and 10 at the top. “L’amore non mi basta” is followed by Jillette Johnson’s “Last bas out” (#2) which finished 2nd after a though decision for Emma. Austria’s new #1 song “Hard out here” (#3) by Lily Allen completes the podium on my chart. While several of the K-Pop songs left my chart this week miss A reached Top 5 with “Hush” (#5). For Australian singer Guy Sebastian is edition no. 153 his first week in my Top 10. “Like a drum” (#8) is super catchy and climbed up five spots to this new peak. The other new song in this part of the chart is “Thunder” (#9). For Jessie J it’s her 3rd Top 10 hit. These songs replaced Satin Circus’ “If you love me” (#15) and “Einer dieser Steine” (#16) by Sido feat. Mark Forster.

Christina Perri is trying hard for reaching her 2nd Top 10 hit. “Human” (#11) is a powerful song and could do the last step next week if … . Yes, there are some songs that could outperform her. One song is an Austro-Pop song by newcomer band Tagträumer (“Daydreamer”). First performed in “Herz von Österreich” their song “Sinn” (#12) is rising up the chart fast. The song itself is well-written about the theme of doing everything for a girl which is not enough. Some of the lines make me smile and I really like the catchy chorus. Another song is “Love and money” (#13). This song by B*Witched is also in its 3rd chart week and has everything which is needed for a Top 10 hit.

And then there is the highest debut of the week. Remember back in 2012 German band Jennifer Rostock reached #1 with their powerful ballad “Ich kann nicht mehr” (“I can’t”). In these weeks they released their latest album “Schlaflos” (“Sleepless”). They released several singles in autumn of 2013 to promote this album, but all of these songs failed to chart, because I don’t like them. But their latest single is far different from these singles and "Ich kann nicht mehr". “K.B.A.G” (#20) which stands for “Kein Bock aber Gästeliste” (“No desire but guest list”) is a critical song about the music industry. The first part of the refrain

„Wir brauchen eine Hug, die irgendwen berührt. (We need a hookline that touches anyone)
Und wir brauchen einen Text, den jeder gleich kapiert. (And we need a text that everyone understands immediately)
Und wir brauchen einen Sound, der im Radio funktioniert. (And we need a sound that works on the radio)
Und dazu eine Fanbase, die kräftig konsumiert. (And as well a fan base that consumes strong)

Wir brauchen eine Corporate Identity, (We need a coroporate identity)
einen Look um die Boxen an der Tournee. (a look round the boxes on tour)
Wir brauchen einen Hit, der die Miete finanziert. (We need a hit which finances the rent)
Und wo kriegen wir ein Feature her, das keinen intressiert?“ (And where do we get a feature that interests no one?)

definitely describes what is needed to get a big hit, but at the end of the refrain they sing “It is good as it is, should remain as it was”. And sure Jennifer Rostock should not bend themselves even I don’t like most of their songs when they have one or two songs like this one on their albums. Maybe they reach Top 10 in the next weeks which will be another music industry critical song beside “Hard out here” in my Top 10 in these days.

“K.B.A.G.” isn’t they only debut in this week’s Top 50. Four more songs are debuting within the Top 50 and two more songs are by German bands. Before I’m writing about these songs let’s go to greatest gainer of the week. And how else could it be? A German song climbed up 25 spots. Helene Fischer is going to dominate the charts in Austria, Germany and Switzerland with “Atemlos durch die Nacht”. Schlager is not my genre, but this song orients on modern English dance pop songs which make this song pretty good.

The 2nd best debut this week is an album cut by Avril Lavinge’s latest self-titled album. “17” (#43) is a very good song out of this album and is the higher of two debuts she had this week. Not far behind US country band The Band Perry give their debut with “Don’t let me be lonely” (#49). They had some hits before, but this one is the first I got into. Then there are the two mentioned German songs. The first is by Luxuslärm who had a Top 10 hit on my chart back in Winter 2012 with “Atemlos” (“Breathless”). Their first single “Durchdrehen” (#48, “Spinning”) from “Alles was du willst” (“Everything you want”) is more dance oriented then “Atemlos” and could be a decent hit on my chart.

The other German song is by Revolverheld. Over the last weeks I charted several songs from their latest album including their singles “Immer in Bewegung” (“Always on the move”) and “Das kann uns keiner nehmen” (“This can take us no one”). Their 3rd single from “Immer in Bewegung” is “Ich lass das Licht für dich an” (#50 “I’ll leave the light on for you“). This one is a beautiful love song about doing everything for another person even If you don’t like the things the partner loves. This is one of my favourite songs on this album. The video is a kinda cute, because it includes a marriage proposal from a friend of singer Johannes Strate to this song.

Other debuts beside the mentioned are “Der letzte Sommerregen” (#60, “The last summer rain”) by Isabelle Schmidt which is a promotional single, “Geh nicht” (#61, “Don’t go”) by Gleis 8, “Lieder” (#62, “Songs) by Adel Tawil which is the first re-entry since “Heart skips a beat” by Olly Murs back in 2012, “Long live Rock N Roll” (#63) by Daughtry which has the same theme as “Lieder”, “Bitchin’ summer” (#73) by Avril Lavigne, “Animal heart” (#85) by Nina Persson, “Young” (#87) by Fresh Ré, “Instant repeater” (#94) by Agnes, “Say heaven, say hell” (#95) by Miss Montreal and “Killing me” (#100) by Jens Hult.
