Week 174 – June 28th, 2014

The #1 changed-up as predicted. Jillette Johnson griped her 3rd #1 out of her sophomore debut album “Water in a whale” when “Peter Pan” (#1) followed “Last bus out” (#83) and last year’s biggest hit “Torpedo”. For Emma’s “La mia città” (#2) only the runner’s up position was left over after one week at the top. The podium is completed by Birdy’s first #1 “Light me up” (#3). Her follow-up single “Not about angels” flopped for me so far and can’t be found on this list. Tearing into the Top 5 is Danish band Electric Lady Lab. Their song “Hurts” (#4) climbed up three spots is now the only song in the Top 6 which didn’t reach #1 at the moment.

“Hurts” is followed by Anouk’s former #1’s “I won’t play that game (live)” (#5) and “You & I” (#6). That Saxophone parts are very popular not only German rapper Cro is showing with his actual top hit “Traum” (“Dream”). The biggest hit with a Saxophone part in this countdown is by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea. Their song “Problem” (#7) climbed up six spots and earns them their first Top 10 hit. Beside “Problem” there is another new song in the Top 10. It’s “Auf uns” (#9, “To us”) by German Andreas Bourani who also reached Top 10 for the first time in Austria this week. Between these new songs Rita Ora’s “I will never let you down” (#8) is placed. Austrian band Tagträumer is closing this week’s Top 10 with “Sinn” (#10). This could be their last week in the Top 10 with this song. But do not worry about them. Too late for this week’s edition they released their 3rd single which will be found on the next edition.

The songs on positions 11 to 20 are rather long on my chart. So there is only one song in this part of the chart that I will predict a chance for reaching Top 10 by next week. It’s “All eyes on you” (#15) by OBB. The Oswald Brothers Band is formed be the brothers Zach, Jacob and Nich. “All eyes on you” has a very infectious sound and a catchy refrain. These ingredients should bring this song to higher parts of the chart where this song could be the first Christian pop song reaching this part of the chart.

After several weeks of low new entries this week the highest new entry can be found within the Top 30. Marlene had two chart hits so far with “Stay awake” had it’s last charting week two week ago. This week she outperformed all of her charting hits with the debut week of the title track of her EP “Indian summer”. “Indian summer” (#24) has everything to become a big hit like an upbeat sentiment, a catchy chorus, a plinky-plonky piano production, and an infectiously joyous disposition how Scandipop described. Marlene’s “Indian summer” isn’t the only Top 30 debut. This week TWB feat. Anouck dropped out of the Top 10 with “Dancing in the dark” (#11). But the world didn’t end for them. They placed their follow-up “Hold back” (#27) straight into the Top 30. “Hold back” is another great house tune which is starting where “Dancing in the dark” ends. Anouck’s voice is lifting the beats of these song to other levels.

The greatest gainer of the week comes by British singer Nick Howard who won the 2nd season of The Voice of Germany. “Can’t break a broken heart” (#43) climbed up 45 spots. It is the 3rd single out of his album “Living in stereo” and the first I’m charting while “Untouchable” and his duet with Lenka “Stuck like glue” failed to impress me. The song itself is very catchy and the whistling part really helps. Unfortunately there is no official video on youtube or elsewhere so you only can watch live versions in very poor quality of this beautiful song. When writing about this week’s greatest gainer I’ve to point out that there is another song in this week’s edition which climbed more than 40 spots. In most of the week’s this song would have been awarded, but this week Nick Howard’s song did a little bit better. The song which climbed up 41 spots is “Ghost” (#25) by Ella Henderson who recently debuted at #1 in UK.

Three songs missed the Top 50 by a few spots. The beginning makes Jessie J with “Sexy lady” (#53). Although never released as an official single this song peaked at #22 in September 2013 in UK. Now I decided to chart this song before I’m waiting longer that this song will be released officially as a single. Jessie J is followed by US band Maroon 5. “Maps” (#54) is a little bit different to their previous work, but no less catchy and interesting. “Maps” should reach Top 20 soon. And then there is one more album cut by Pink. “The great escape” (#55) is the highest of her three debuts this week.

Other debuts are “Is this thing on” (#74) by Pink, “Run” (#75) by Pink, “Non mi ami” (#79, “You don’t love me”) by Giorgia, “Beautiful world” (#87) by Jasmine Kara, “All the others” (#88) by The Coronas and “Real woman” (#89) by Chila Lynn.
