Week 372 – April 14th, 2018

During the week a saw a thread where some compared artists who took very long for reaching #1 on their personal chart. As I pointed out over the last weeks Die Fantastischen Vier and Clueso have only a handful of hits on my chart and so it seems that these two artists are good examples for artists who took the longest time before reaching #1 for the first time since I re-started charting back in 2011. So I looked over my chart records and here are the Top 5 artists with the longest timeframe between the first chart appearance and the first week at #1:

#5: Carly Rae Jepsen (5 years, 8 months and 16 days)

She took the world by storm with her unforgotten “Call me maybe”. This song debuted on November 19, 2011 on my chart, but failed to reach my Top 5. “Call me maybe” peaked at #6 during its 23 weeks run on my chart. Back in 2017 she got her first #1 with “Cut to the feeling”.

#4: Ed Sheeran (5 years, 10 months and 11 days)

The first single by Ed Sheeran had been “The A team” which debuted on my chart on June 18, 2011. “The A team” charted for 12 weeks and peaked at #12. It took Ed Sheeran until 2017 before he reached #1 for the first time with “Shape of you”. “Shape of you” peaked at #1 for a single week.

#3: Lady Gaga (5 years, 11 months and 23 days)

She debuted on July 16, 2011 with “The edge of glory”. This song charted seven weeks and peaked at #61. She reached #1 with “The cure” on July 8, 2017 and stayed for three weeks.

#2: Clueso (6 years, 4 months and 4 days)

He reached my chart for the first time as featured act on the Udo Lindenberg song “Cello”. “Cello” peaked at #79 in its first of four weeks on chart on December 3, 2011. Last week he reached #1 as the featured act on the song “Zusammen” (#1, “Together”) with Die Fantastischen Vier.

#1: Kylie Minogue (6 years, 6 months and 25 days)

Her first chart hit had been “Put your hands up (if you feel love)”. This song peaked at #92 in its first of two weeks on chart on July 9, 2011. She reached her first #1 with “Dancing” (#2) back in March this year and stayed for four weeks.

Two songs of this short list are still in my Top 5. “Zusammen” defended its title and “Dancing” is still in the runners-up position. Generally the Top 4 is still the same as last week. So “I don’t think about you” (#3) by Kelly Clarkson and “Shoot this arrow” (#4) by Kate Voegele are non-movers. The only new song in my Top 5 is “Ordinary idols” (#5) by Cold War Kids.

The bottom half of my Top 10 sees several changes. “Effetto domino” (#6, “Domino effect”) by Emma and “Stop me from falling” (#7) by Kylie Minogue climbed up three spots. Down three spots are “Bad bad drug” (#8) by Kate Voegele and “The middle” (#9) by Zedd & Maren Morris & Grey. The only new song within my Top 10 is EDM by Sigala and Paloma Faith. For both “Lullaby” (#10) is their first Top 10 hit on my chart.

Last week “Your side of the bed” (#35) by Loote shared the award for the greatest gainer of the week with “Stop me from falling” by Kylie Minogue. This week the awards goes only to Loote who climbed up 17 spots. The biggest debut just missed the Top 50 by one spot. It is “Clearly” (#51) by Grace VanderWall who recently charted with “Moonlight” and “So much more than this”. Her latest hit samples Johnny Nash’s “I can see clearly now” and makes something new out of it. I really like this song by her and “Clearly” is maybe a future Top 20 hit for her.

In total 15 new songs reached my chart this week. The 2nd best is by German Alice Merton. Last year I charted “No roots” which is actually a big hit in the US. Now she returns with her new single “Lash out” (#60) which is pretty good, but not as good as “No roots”. She is followed by Cassadee Pope who is best known on my chart for reaching Top 10 with “I wish I could break your heart” (peaked at #4 in 2014). This week Cassadee Pope debuts with “Take you home” (#61). Another spot behind is “I wanna know” (#62) by NOTD feat. Bea Miller. While it is the debut for Swedish producer team NOTD “I wanna know” is the return to my chart for Bea Miller.

Other debuts are “Oh my god” (#85) and “Hunger” (#86) by Luke Sital-Singh, “With you” (#89) by Kygo feat. Wrabel, “In my blood” (#90) and “Lost in Japan” (#91) by Shawn Mendes, “Never see me cry” (#93) by Una Healy, “Heart beat here” (#95) by Dashboard Confessional, “Something ‘bout you” (#96) by Sir Rosevelt, “Better with you” (#97) by Jesse McCartney, “Love me right” (#98) by Amber Mark and “Back to you” (#99) by Shane Filan.
