Week 167 – May 10th, 2014

Last night the Eurovision Song Contest occurred in Denmark. It ended with a stunning win by Austrian drag artist Thomas Neuwirth better known as Conchita Wurst.

Over the last years I charted several songs from the Contest and the qualifying shows. Some of the songs did better some only charted one week like this years Finnish contestant Softengine. So far the highest charting song by an Eurovision Song Contest contestant from Austria has been Natália Kelly with “Shine” (peak at #9 in May 2013). This year Conchita Wurst has been chosen by an intern selection. I absolutely can understand why this song or better this artificial character has won the contest, but I personally don’t like this song although I’m proud of this 2nd win. In the end I’m going with our 1st win by Udo Jürgens’ “Mercie Cherie”

which is a classic.

Enough about the Eurovision Song Contest let’s take a look at this weeks chart. After several calm weeks at the top spots there are some changes. Still at the top is Anouk with “I won’t play that game”. This song is now her longest running #1 with six weeks. For the first time Chila Lynn reached the runner up position with “When love …” (#2). Austrian band Tagträumer returned at #3 with “Sinn” in its 17th week. This brings me back to Anouk who dropped down two spots with her former chart topper “You & I” (#4). Birdy did a big step this week. She climbed up three spots with “Light me up” (#6). Emma who participated in this years Eurovision Song Contest dropped one with “L’amore non mi basta” (#7) after spending a half year on my chart and 25 weeks within the Top 10. Finally Tone Damli reached the Top 10 with “Heartkill” (#9) and replaced another song by Emma who is now at #11 with “La mia felicità”.

Emma’s Eurovision Song Contest participation ended at #21 among 26 countries in the final. I liked her performance and her song “La mia città” (#12) is almost in the Top 10. The Top 10 are also the aim of Ewelina Lisowska with “W stronę słońca” (#17) and Rita Ora “I will never let you down” (#18). And of course of several other artists, but these ones have the best chance to be in the Top 10 within the next weeks. The highest new entry comes by an Artist who had two #1’s on my chart so far. Her last #1 has been “Last bus out” (#47). It’s Jillette Johnson with “Peter Pan” (#38). “Peter Pan” is another well performed and very good song by her. If everything develops as expected “Peter Pan” should be Jillette Johnson’s 6th Top 10 hit.

“Peter Pan” is followed by another new song in this week’s countdown. “Rather be” is one of the biggest hits at the moment and therefore the Airplay is going up and up with no end in sight. I charted Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne with “Rather be” for the first time back in February when this song was big in UK. But “Rather be” only peaked at #87 for me and dropped out after three weeks. Because there is no escape for this song they returned even stronger and give their comeback at #39. On a dragrope is Clean Bandit’s 2nd charting song “Extraordinary” (#75) which is this weeks greatest gainer of the week.

The 2nd best new entry comes by Pharrell Williams. Over the last year he had several hits. Starting with “Blurred lines” or “Get lucky” where he was featured to his this year’s smash “Happy”. What have all these songs in common? I didn’t charted this world hits. To put this in a nutshell Pharrell Williams gives his chart debut with “Marilyn Monroe” (#57) which could be his next big hit or his first flop in a while because I'm charting this song? ;)

Other new songs on the list are “I’m not sorry” (#58) by Celeste Buckingham, “Afterlifte” (#79 which is her official single in Germany, Switzerland and Austria) by Ingrid Michaelson, “Heal” (#86) by Mo, “Last night” (#87) by The Vamps, “Dollhouse” (#89) by Melanie Martinez, “Basset hound” (#93) by Jillette Johnson, “A sky full of stars” (#94) by Coldplay, “Stay with you tonight” (#99) by Clinton Sparks feat. Riff Raff and “Please stay” (#100) by Rennata.
