Week 418 – March 2rd, 2019

Since 2011 every year at least one song by an Austrian artist reached #1. In 2011 it all started with Any Major Dude and their song for the Eurovision Song Contest “July July” (#1 for 4 weeks). This had been the bands only #1 and some years ago the disbanded. In 2012 dialect rock band Krautschädl reached #1 for the first time with their hit “Khoids Wossa” (“Cold water”) and peaked for 4 weeks. 2013 saw two Austrian #1 hits. The 1st had been by Christina Stürmer with “Millionen Lichter” (“Millions of lights”; for 1 week) and the 2nd had been “I know you will wait for me” (for 3 weeks) by Rising Girl feat. DJ Lil Dirty. “I know you will wait for me” is a classic one-hit wonder for them. 2014 saw the first #1 by Tagtraeumer. They reached #1 with “Sinn” (“Sense; for 5 weeks) and “Mein Herz (für immer)” (“My heart (for always)”; for 1 week). The next year once more Tagtraeumer reached #1. This time they lead the chart with “Brücken zum Mond” (“Bridges to the moon”; for 2 weeks) and “Nichts” (“Nothing”; for 2 weeks). Between these songs Krautschädl scored their last #1 in 2015 with “Feiah fonga” (“Catching fire”; for 2 weeks). Krautschädl eventually disbanded late in 2018. In 2016 Christina Stürmer scored her 2nd #1 with “Seite an Seite” (“Side by side”; for 1 week). The next year Tagtraeumer again scored two #1 hits. This time it had been “Straßenlaternen” (“Street lights”; for 1 week) and “Pfeile” (“Arrows”; for 3 weeks). “Pfeile” later also reached #1 for a single week in 2018.

This brings me to 2019. It lasted 14 months before the next song by an Austrian artist reached #1 on my chart. For the first time Austrian singer AVEC reached #1. Her song had been released in a regular radio edit and in the club edit. I’m charting the club edit. “Under water” (#1) climbed up five spots to reach its first week at #1 in its 2nd week in my Top 10. Last week’s #1 “Tell me it’s over” (#2) by Avril Lavigne dropped one spot. Also down one spot are “Nothing breaks like a heart” (#3) by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus and “Thank you” (#4) by Lena. Up three spots and into my Top 5 is Mabel’s recent single “Don’t call me up” (#5).

While two songs are new in my Top 5 two songs had to leave. These are “Trouble” (#6) by Parov Stelar feat. Nikki Williams and “The less I know” (#9) by Topic feat. Alexander Tidebrink. Holding its spot is “Das schöne Leben” (“The beautiful life”, #7) by Swiss duo Steiner & Madlaina. Up one spot is “Metronom” (“Metronome”, #8) by Tagtraeumer. The Top 10 is rounded out with the only new song in this part. Italian singer Annalisa is back in this part with her recent single “Un domani” (“Tomorrow”, #10). Italian rapper Mr. Rain is featured on this track.

Normally the award for the greatest gainer of the week goes to one or maybe two acts. This week three songs climbed up 20 spots. These are “Thick and thin” (#31) by LANY, “If you see her” (#32) also by LANY and “For now” (#57) by Pink. The highest debut is by Avril Lavigne’s controversial new single “Dumb blonde” (#43) with a feature by Nicki Minaj. I like this song but I also see why others aren’t really into this song. The 2nd highest debut can be found just outside the Top 50. It is “My love goes on” (#51) by James Morrison feat. Joss Stone. At first I was undecided whether I chart this song or not. I gave this song a 2nd chance and now it got its debut.
