Week 462 – January 4th, 2020

tThe New Year brings a new chart. And this week there are 16 debuts. None of these debuts can be found within the Top 10. Canadian singer The Weeknd still tops the chart with his 80s vibe song “Blinding lights” (#1). He is followed by Selena Gomez. Her song “Lose you to love me” (#2) is also holding its spot while Alanis Morissette climbed up two spots with her recent single “Reasons I drink” (#3). Therefore Emma had to leave the Top 3 with her smash “Io sono bella” (#4, “I am beautiful”). Down one spot is maybe a future all-time favourite of mine. “Higher love” (#5) by Kygo & Whitney is now in its 23rd week on chart.

Heavily knocking at the door to the Top 5 is “French” (#6) by Kate Voegele. As many of the users of M4B are posting their favourite songs of the 2010’s I just had a closer look at my favourite songs from the 2010’s. Kate Voegele had several #1’s and so she will reach my Top 100 of the 2010’s for several times but I won’t post my Top 100 for the 2010’s. This has two main reasons. First I’ve not charted back in 2010 so I missed a little bit more than a year. Second I’m celebrating the charts tenth anniversary as well as my tenth year on M4B next year so that I will do this next year. Let’s go back to this week’s chart edition. “French” is followed by “Kissing other people” (#7) by Lennon Stella. Up one spot is “Malibu nights” (#8) by LANY. Dropping down is “Used to love” (#9) by Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis. This week’s Top 10 is rounded out with the only new song in this part of the chart. Let’s welcome British singer HRVY who reached the Top 10 for the first time. His hit single is “Million ways” (#10) which climbed up two spots.

This week’s greatest gainer is “Another place” (#57) by Bastille & Alessia Cara. Their song climbed up 17 spots. This leads me as always to the highest debut of the week. This week it is a cover version. As I pointed out over the years I’m not really into cover songs, but recently “Higher love” peaked at the top for seven weeks and there are some more cover songs in this week’s editon. “Take on me” (#14) by Italian singer Alice Pisano climbed up three spots and is a cover of the A-ha 80’s classic I always loved since I saw their music video the first time on TV in these days. Another cover I’m actually charting is “I can’t make you love me” (#20) by Teddy Swims. This is a cover of the 1991 hit by Bonnie Raitt I’ve not heard before, but back on track.

This week’s highest debut is by US singer Kina Grannis. I’ve charted her three times before. The first time it had been with “Message from your heart” (peaked at #79) back in 2011, the second time it had been with “In your arms” (peaked at #63) back in 2011/12 and the third time it had been with “Without me” (peaked at #86) back in 2013. These songs had minor success, but most of her work I’m finding disappointing (which is only my opinion). This week she returns with a cover of “Lose you to love me” (#25). This song recently topped my chart for four weeks and now for the first time I’m charting the original and its cover in the same week. I discovered this song on YouTube because the algorithm recommended me a video by YouTube personality and producer Kurt Hugo Schneider. He recently did some videos with the theme “What if a specific song was by” which is based on a series of videos by musician Ali Spagnola. However, he worked with Kina Grannis on this song in the style of Billie Eilish’s song “Ocean eyes”. Neither have I charted this song or any other songs by Billie Eilish nor I’m interested in charting songs by her anytime soon because I’m not interested her music (just my opinion). Although I don’t like her songs I really like this cover version which is now the highest debut of the week.

80		no success	Lotte – Schau mich nicht so an Points: 800.3 Peak: #20 Weeks: 17 Album: Glück Airplay: #61 German singer Lotte had some minor hits before, but in 2019 she returned stronger. “Schau mich nicht so an” (“Don’t look at me like that”) became her first Top 20 hit and because of its long activity this song reached #80 in the year-end review.
79		no success	Hayden Panettiere – Water rising Points: 802.3 Peak: #13 Weeks: 17 Album: The music of Nashville original soundtrack season 5 volume 3 Airplay: #20 The drama series “Nashville” produced over the years a large number of chart hits. Back in 2018/19 I watched the 5th season of this series. The biggest hit out of this season has been “Water rising” by Hayden Panettiere who plays “Juliette Barns”. There had been Top 10 hits before for this series but this song really impressed me and it eventually peaked at #13.
78		no success	Lucy Spraggan – Lucky stars Points: 804.1 Peak: #11 Weeks: 17 Album: Today was a good day Airplay: #78 Back in 2012 Lucy Spraggan participated for X Factor in Great Britain with her song “Last night (beer fear)”. This become her only chart hit and eventually peaked at #70 in October 2012 in its three weeks chart run. Six and a half year later she debuted with her song “Lucky stars” at #89. Two months later this song peaked at #11 and became her biggest hit for me up to date.
77		no success	Anna Clendening – Invisible Points: 806.0 Peak: #11 Weeks: 19 Album: Waves EP Airplay: #85 In at #77 is another newcomer. Anna Clendening released late in 2018 her song “Invisible” which easily climbed up the charts. It eventually peaked at #11 in January. I really like the songs theme and lyrics and I hope that she will return with another strong song in the future.
76		no success	Annalisa – Il prossimo weekend Points: 813.9 Peak: #11 Weeks: 15 Album: Bye bye Airplay: #164 Annalisa’s album “Bye bye” is very good in my eyes. It had several hits including “Il prossimo weekend” (“The next weekend”) which I charted recently. It is only an album cut, but could have been definitely a good single too.
75		no success	Annalisa – Le parole non mentono Points: 857.7 Peak: #1 (1 week) Weeks: 30 Album: Bye bye Airplay: #71 “Le parole non mentono” (“Words don’t lie”) has been Annalisa’s first #1 hit. It reached its peak in 2018 and therefore it became #28 in the year-end of 2018. Due to its long activity this song also did well in 2019 and reached this notable spot.
74		no success	Cold War Kids – Complainer Points: 863.4 Peak: #17 Weeks: 17 Album: New age norms 1 Airplay: #93 The first single from their new album was a good one. “Complainer” did well and peaked within the Top 20, but failed to do as well as several songs from their album “LA devine”.

This includes her smash “Ne m’appelle pas” (“Don’t call me”). “Ne m’appelle pas” became her first Top 10 hit in years and it is definitely one of her best songs.

It reached the Top 10 where it peaked at #10. It is a good song, but there had been some other songs from this album which outperformed this single.
71		no success	Ingrid Michaelson – Missing you Points: 905.7 Peak: #18 Weeks: 17 Album: Stranger songs Airplay: #74 Over the years US singer Ingrid Michaelson had some minor hits including her biggest hits “Fire” back in 2012 (year-end #98) which peaked at #20 and “Afterlife” (year-end #137) which peaked at #19 in 2014. For the third time in her career she cracked the Top 20 with “Missing you”. This time she did better than in 2012 and “Missing you” eventually peaked at #71 in the year-end review.
