Week 369 – March 24th, 2018

This week is characterized with the same #1 as last week, one new song in the Top 10, ten new songs in general and several debuts which are associated with the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. But let’s start with my Top 10 as every week. Kylie Minogue is defending the title with “Dancing” (#1) for a third week. One more week and this song could outperform “Shoot this arrow” (#3) by Kate Voegele as longest lasting #1 this year. Caught between these two mentioned songs is another song by Kate Voegele. “Bad bad drug” (#2) is holding its spot for a third consecutive week. While former #1 “Shoot this arrow” is bouncing back into the Top 3 Luke Sital-Singh’s former #1’s “Killing me” (#4) and “Still” (#6) are dropping down. New in the Top 5 is Sigrid with “Strangers” (#5).

As you saw the second half of my Top 10 is opened with “Still” by Luke Sital-Singh. He is followed by two songs which are holding their spots. So “The middle” (#7) by Zedd & Maren Morris & Grey and “Hurt somebody” (#8) by Noah Kahan & Julia Michaels are non-movers. Next in line is last week’s Top 10 debut “Curious” (#9) by Hayley Kiyoko which climbed up one spot this week. And here the only Top 10 debut comes. It is another song by Kelly Clarkson who recently reached #1 with “Love so soft”. This week she returns with her latest single “I don’t think about you” (#10).

This week an interesting effect occurred on my chart. Last week I had so many debuts in the Top 50 that they are sticking around this week. Between #31 and #42 none of the songs moved up or down this week. So the greatest gainer of the week can be found outside the Top 50 this week. It is “Il mondo prima di te” (#65, “The world before you”) by Annalisa. Not far above the greatest gainer of the week the highest debut can be found. It is the comeback single by core artist Matt Cardle. The last time he charted had been back in 2015 with his album cuts “Porcelain” and “This trouble is ours”. Nearly two and a half year later he debuts with the first single “Desire” (#57) out of his new album “Time to be alive”. “Desire” is a good single choice and I’m sure that this song will end in my Top 10. This debut is followed by the new Taylor Swift single “Delicate” (#58).

Over the years I’ve charted several songs which participated in the Eurovision Song Contest and songs which tried in the national qualification rounds. Some of these songs ended in the Top 10 on my chart. The first and only Song Contest song which reached #1 had been “La mia città” (“My city”) back in 2014 by Italian core artist Emma who is awaited to reach #1 with her latest single “Effetto domino” (#21, “Domino effect”). But there are two more songs which reached 1# on my chart and which participated. Both songs failed in the national qualification round. One in Austria which had been “July July” by Any Major Dude back in 2011. One in Finland which had been “Crossroads” by Satin Circus back in 2015. These three songs are the highest ranked songs from this contest since 2011, but there are some other songs which reached my year-end Top 100 over the years. These songs are “Should’ve known better” (peaked at #10) by Soluna Samay from Guatemala for Denmark in 2012, “If you ever feel” (peaked at #10; failed to qualify) by Viky Red for Romania in 2012, “Birds” (peaked at #19) by Anouk for the Netherlands in 2013, “Shine” (peaked at #9) by Natália Kelly from the USA for Austria in 2013, “Glorious” (peaked at #7) by Cascada for Germany in 2013, “Busy doin’ nothin’ ” (peaked at #10; failed to qualify) by Ace Wilder for Sweden in 2014, “Goodbye to yesterday” (peaked at #4) by Elina Born & Stig Rästa for Estonia in 2015 and “Solange Liebe in mir wohnt” (“As long as love lives in me”; peaked at #18; failed to qualify) by Luxuslärm for Germany in 2016.

These are the songs representing this contest on my chart over the years, but the 2018 contest in Portugal is up to come in May. Of course there are several songs out of this 2018 contest which are trying to impress me. Over the last weeks songs from Germany, Austria and Australia got there debut. These songs are “You let me walk alone” (#49) by Michael Schulte, “House on fire” (#50; failed to qualify in Germany) by Ivy Quainoo, “Nobody but you” (#46) by Cesár Sampson and “We got love” (#37) by Jessica Mauboy. This week I gave all other songs a listen and five more songs are giving their debut. The highest one is “You and I” (#59; failed to qualify) by Armenian-Ukrainian Asmik Shiroyan for Armenia. Asmik Shiroyan rose to fame in Ukraine after participating in season four of “The Voice of Ukraine” in 2014. With “You and I” she participated for the second time in “Depi Evratisil” after 2017. In my eyes this song has the same star appeal as “We got love” from Australia, but Armenia decided to go with Sevak Khanagyan with “Qami” (“Wind”). The next debut is by Estonian Stig Rästa. He finished 2nd with “Home” (#77; failed to qualify) in “Eesti Laul 2018”. “Home” isn’t as good as “Goodbye to yesterday”, but definitely worth listening. Then there is “Crazy” (#78) by Croatian singer Franka. I hope that this song will have a good show, because the video is very good. Also very interesting is “Fuego” (#79) by Eleni Foureira. Eleni Foureira is from Albania, but emigrated to Greece during the Albanian Civila War in the 1990’s. In Greece she started her career and now she represents Cyprus in 2018. I think this is no bad choice for Cyprus to get the points from Greece and Albania. And last but not least there is a song from Finland. This year Finland had to decide between three songs by Saara Aalto. They decided to go with “Monsters” (#80) which I absolutely understand.

Other debuts are “Revolution” (#74) and “My brother” (#75) by MisterWives and “Shattered to piece” (#100) by Salems Lott.
