Week 474 – March 28th, 2020

Before this week’s edition only five songs did what this song did this week. Do you remember Cover Drive feat. Dappy’s “Explode”? This song had been the first one which debuted at #1 back in 2012. One and half year later Anouk debuted at the top spot with “You & I”. By the way Anouk is also the only artist who debuted three times at the top. While “You & I” debuted at the top back in 2014 “Wanna little something” and “If I knew” did so back in 2016. Caught between these Anouk #1 debuts is the only one by Adele. Her song “Hello” got its #1 debut in October 2015, but since the end of September 2016 no other song debuted at the top until this week.

So this week got an entry in the history books. For the first time a song in German entered the chart directly at #1 and it is the first #1 for German punk rock band Die Ärzte too. They started their career in the early 1980’s and since that they had several hits including “Ein Schwein namens Männer” (“A pig called men”) which reached #1 in Austria and Germany in 1998, “Junge” (“Boy”) and “Lasse redn” (“Let them talk”). All these songs were released before I began re-charting. Since 2011 only one single by them reached my chart. It had been “M&F” which peaked at #9 back in August 2012 and left the chart in November 2012. Nearly seven and a half year later Die Ärzte did the unexpected. On Friday they released their new single “Ein Lied für jetzt” (“A song for now”). It is a very simple song with simple chords but this song is absolutely hitting the nail on the head in these times. They are singing about being in quarantine because the state is forcing social distancing. Several things about this situation are sticking around and so the opening line

„Ich sitze Zuhause und langweile mich
Klopapier und Nudeln sammle ich nicht“

„I’m sitting at home and bored
toilet paper and pasta I don’t collect”

really nails it when you’ve wondered why all the people are buying hundreds of toilet paper packages and shelves in the shops were empty. The video to this song was shot in their homes and it is absolutely worth seeing although it is also very simple too, but as always they give us something to discover.

So that’s enough about the new #1. Last week’s #1 “Physcial” (#2) by Dua Lipa dropped one spot as “Blinding lights” (#3) by The Weeknd. Up one spot is Austrian singer Tina Naderer with her song “Richtig falsch” (#4, “Right wrong”). “Before you go” (#5) by Lewis Capaldi dropped two spots.

Knocking at the door to the Top 5 is Mark Forster with his single “Liebe” (#6, “Love”). This is so far his biggest hit up-to-date and it should reach the Top 5 by next week. For Taylor Swift this week’s edition is an up and down. “Cruel summer” (#7) dropped three spots while “The man” (#9) climbed up one. Caught between is Alanis Morissette with “Reasons I drink” (#8). Down two spots is “Rare” (#10) by Selena Gomez.

Beside the #1 debut only three more songs got their debut. These are “Treppenhaus” (#83, “Stairwell”) by LEA, “Kamikaze” (#90) by Die Toten Hosen and “Gaslighter” (#94) by Dixie Chicks.
