Week 603 – September 17th, 2022

Last week Pale Waves reached #1 with “Jealousy” (#1). This week they defended the title and are still in hunt with former #1 “Lies” (#2). In fact the whole Top 3 is holding their spots so “Last cigarette” (#3) by Morgan Wade is completing the podium. Also non-moving is Esther Graf with her song “sad = sexy” (#4). While these songs are holding their spots you will be surprised about the song at #5. This song is definitely coming out of nowhere.

As you all know my chart you’ve noticed that there are hardly any debuts in the Top 20 or even in the Top 10 since the last four or five years. Before that there have been Top 20 debuts on a regular basis. So that there is a debut in the Top 10 is a big surprise. For that I’ve looked in the record books. The last time a song debuted in the Top 20 had been back in April (nearly five months ago) with “Something better” (#22) by Anouk. This song later failed to reach #1. The last song which debuted in the Top 10 had been “Ein Lied für jetzt” (“A song for now”) by German band Die Ärzte. This song not only debuted in the Top 10 it also debuted at #1 when it started its chart run in March 2020.

So this is the 1st Top 10 debut since two and a half year. Now you all will know which band is doing so well. It is by a band I’m a fan since their debut in the early 2000’s. They started their career with the hit “Perfekte Welle” (“Perfect wave”) in 2004 which peaked at #2 in Germany and Austria. Their 2nd hit had been “Geile Zeit” (“The perfect time”). Both songs are Juli’s signature songs and these are among my favourite songs of all time. After a break of nearly eight years, they are finally back. If you count their last single “Fahrrad” (“Bicycle”, peaked #91) in Mai 2019 its only three years, but “Fahrrad” was their only single in five years. Technically they haven’t released anything significant in eight years when they released their last album “Insel” (“Island”). This album also produced the bands last big hits. “Wasserfall” (peaked at #18 in 2015) became their last hit in the Top 20 and with “Insel” (peaked at #1 in September 2014) they had their only #1 since I re-started charting back in 2011.

It lasted eight years before Juli returned to the Top 10. Their new single “Fette wilde Jahre” (#5, “Big wild years”) is a reminiscence to the youth on the one hand and to both mentioned singles “Perfekte Welle” and “Geile Zeit” on the other hand. I really love the vibe of the song which makes me feel nearly 20 years younger when the band released their first big hits and I was studying mathematics and history in Salzburg back in these days. Somehow I miss these days and “Fette wilde Jahre” is a perfect gem to wallow in nostalgia. For me this song has everything to reach #1 and so be prepared that this band will get their first #1 since 2014. Nearly a decade after their 1st one on my chart.

After wallowing in the past let’s get back on track. The song which failed to enter the Top 5 because of this debut is “What he didn’t do” (#6) by Carly Pearce. “Irrelevant” (#7) by Pink dropped out of the Top 5. Next in line is “Girl of your dreams” (#8) by Dylan which dropped one spot. For the first time in the Top 10 is Canadian singer Ali Gatie. His song “IDK” (#9) climbed up two spots. Also new in the Top 10 are Kygo and Dean Lewis with their song “Lost without you” (#10) after climbing up four spots.

Last week Italian singer Annalisa returned with her new single. This week “Bellissima” (#24, “Extremely beautiful”) by her is the greatest gainer of week after climbing up 18 spots. Normally, this information is followed by the information of the highest debut. As this week saw a Top 10 debut you’ve already read about this info. But there are two more debuts in this week’s Top 20. I can’t even remember when there are three songs debuting in the Top 20. Maybe you ask if this is really my chart I’ve to answer yes! The 2nd best debut is by Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen. Her songs always have been hit or miss for me. Although not a big of her last single “Beach house” got some weeks on chart. Now she returns strong with “Talking to yourself” (#14) which could do as well as “Cut to the feeling” (peaked #1 in 2017) and “Now that I found you” (peaked at #3 in 2019). And last but not least Austrian singer Esther Graf is debuting with her newest “Into it” (#20). By the way I don’t really like that she is using English song titles although the songs are in German.
