Week 642 – June 17th, 2023

Pale Waves are back in business with their album “Unwanted”. Last week they climbed up four spots to #1 and now they are celebrating a double pack at the top of the chart. Still in the lead is “Only problem” (#1). New at the podium is “Without you” (#2). Holding its spot is “Velvet heartbreak” (#3) by Carrie Underwood. This means that “Temporary” (#4) – although topping the chart five times – dropped out of the Top 3 two weeks after the last time it had been found at the top. Next in line is “Renn zurück” (#5, “Run back”) by Austrian singer Esther Graf and German rapper Fourty.

Just outside the Top 5 is “Up to me” (#6) by LANY after climbing up two spots. This song is followed by “Favorite kind of high” (#7) by Kelly Clarkson. She returned to the Top 10 after more than 2 years. The last time she had been in the Top 10 had been with “I would’ve loved you” (peaked #7) when she teamed up with Jake Hoot. “River” (#8) dropped three spots and is on its way out of this part as the Top 10 is generally getting younger. This leads to the other new songs in the Top 10. First to mention is “So good (at what you do)” (#9) by m els. This song was part of the qualification round in Estonia but failed to impress. I like this song so much that this unknown artist (at least for me) reached the Top 10 with its first chart appearance. The other one is “Psychopath” (#10) by Morgan Wade who is since her debut album “Reckless” a constant factor for the Top 10.

The award for the greatest gainer of the week goes to Italian singer Emma. Her latest single “Mezzo mondo” (#55, “Half the world”) climbed up 14 spots in its 6th charting week. Not far behind the highest debut can be found. Unfortunately, it failed to reach the Top 50. On the other side there is a lot of room for improvement. So which new song impressed me most? It is Leslie Clio’s single “Teardrops” (#63). This song is a cover of the biggest hit by Womack & Womack. They reached the Top 10 in Austria back in 1988. For me this cover is working and maybe this one brings Leslie Clio back into the Top 10. The last time she had reached this part of the chart had been in 2018 with “In and out” (peaked at #6)

Other debuts are “What I want” (#72) by Lena, “Paradise” (#77) by Sophie and the Giants & Purple Disco Machine, “No angels” (#81) by Bastille feat. Ella Eyre – which is a cover of 1990’s smash “No scrubs” by TLC – “Same again (for love)” (#84) by Dagny, “Alone” (#85) by Kim Petras & Nicki Minaj, “Summer rain” (#87) by Victoria Nadine, “City nights” (#88) by Nico Santos, “Emma” (#89) by Casper, “Love U for fun” (#91) by Neriah, “I know it won’t work” (#91) by Gracie Abrams, “Rockstar” (#95) by BoyWithUke and “Break for you” (#96) by Valley.
