Week 686 – April 20th, 2024

FKA twigs is on her way to outperform every other song on my chart with her song “Killer” (#1). This song is now seven weeks at the top of the chart and only three songs did better since re-starting my chart back in 2011. In two runs “Receive” by Alanis Morissette scored ten weeks at #1. Eight of these weeks had been back in 2012. Nine weeks at the top had been by “L’amore non mi basta” (“Love is not enough”) by Emma. This song started its run at the top in December 2013 and ended its run in February 2014. And the third one is “If I knew” by Anouk. It’s the only song in this Top 3 which started its chart run at #1 in October 2016 which lasted eight weeks. So, it’s been nearly eight years since the last song stayed more than seven weeks at the top. The last song which also reached the seven weeks mark at the top had been “Higher love” by Kygo & Whitney Houston back in 2019.

But is there really a chance for FKA twigs to succeed? Here I’m not sure. “Keep your demons” (#2) by TAELA is now for four weeks pinned down at the runner’s up spot and for at least during the last two weeks it had been a tough decision. Maybe next week is the only chance for TAELA to take over or the window is closed. Mostly because there are two songs which could do very well. The first song to mention is “R&J” (#3) by Austrian singer Ella Stern. For her this song is her 1st hit in the Top 3 with her first appearance on the chart. The other one is “CLICK BOOM!” (#6) by Rose Villain. She charted only two times before, but never reached the Top 10. Rose Villain started her career with the 2016 single “Get the fuck outta my pool” and constantly failed to impress me until she released “CLICK BOOM!” which failed to impress me with the first listen. So, it hasn’t been love at first sight.

Beside the question which one will follow “Killer” at the top spot there is comeback by “You & me” (#3) by Jennie in the Top 3 in its 16th charting week. Dropping out of the Top 3 is “Überall” (#5, “Everywhere”) by Esther Graf & Montez. I personally don’t know what Esther Graf is up too, but she just released “Vitamin d[ u]” (#32, “Vitamin y[ou]” and on Friday – to late for this edition – she released her next single with “She’s so cool”. Once more I’m asking myself why this one must have an English song title. I can’t answer it, but there is a general trend to replace German words with English words (even in school subjects – why the hell?)

Outside the Top 5 you can find former #1 “Euforia” (#7, “Euphoria”) by Annalisa which dropped one spot. Up one spot is “Therapie” (#8) by Wanda. Rounding out this week’s Top 10 are two new songs in this part of the chart. The highest ranked new song is “”Shape of me” (#9) by Rita Ora. The other one is “Can I jump?” (#10) by Frey Ridings. For both it is a comeback in the Top 10.

The greatest gainer of the week is “Nur noch ein Lied” (#42, “Just one more song”) by Bosse & LEA. This song climbed up 20 spots. The highest debut is the non-album single “Dive” (#51) by Holly Humberstone. This is definitely a song which will end in the Top 20 at least. Not far behind you can find the 2nd best debut which is by Austrian singer Sinikka Monte. You haven’t heard of her? Me neither. She has released some singles over the last years, but “Knock & run” (#53) is the song which brought her on my radar. This is also a song which could do very well on my chart. Speaking about songs which are assumed to do well. There is also the debut by Dylan Conrique with “Never change” (#60). As “When I go” (#12) just dropped out of the Top 10 this one should follow in these footsteps.

Other debuts are “Nobody” (#77) by OneRepublic, “Epiphany” (#78) by Alicia Creti, “Ella bailaba” (#84, “She danced”) and “The killers” (#90) by Aitana – I just saw her film debut on Netflix, but I much prefer her singing! –, “Fell first, fell hard” (#85) by Katherine Li, “Best friend for life” (#93) by Grace Leer and “BANG!” (#98) by WHIB.
