Week 329 – June 17th, 2017

With June 17th the end of the Germans reign starts on my chart. This week Canadian singer Shawn Mendes took over with his catchy “There’s nothing holdin’ me back” (#1). For him this song is his first #1 on my chart and he’s continuing the male domination this year. After Ed Sheeran with “Shape of you” (#40) and Wincent Weiss with “Nur ein Herzschlag entfernt” (#4, “Only one heartbeat away”) he is the third male solo singer at the top of my chart this year. This is the first time since 2013 when four male singers (Matt Cardle, Ben Montague, Mic Donet and Bosse) toped my chart and the year isn’t over yet. None of the mentioned singers are charting this week and so it is up to new artists to reach my top spot. Last week’s #1 “And I’m leaving” (#2) by Leslie Clio dropped one spot while US band Cold War Kids are reaching my Top 3 with “Can we hang on?” (#3). Still at the bottom of my Top 5 is Lady Gaga with “The cure” (#5).

The 2nd part of my Top 10 is opened with a song praising the life. It is “Lust for life” (#6) by Lana Del Rey feat. The Weeknd. It is still hard for this good song to reach my Top 5, but not impossible. Next in line is another band from the US. Last week Paramore celebrated their Top 10 return after six years with “Hard times” (#7). This week they climbed up two spots. Dour GJan is fighting against her drop out of my Top 10. Actually she is holding her spot with her former #1 “Wasn’t easy” (#8). The last two spots in my Top 10 are going to new songs. Let’s welcome Shawn Hook and Vanessa Hudgens. For both “Reminding me” (#9) is their first Top 10 hit on my chart. And then there is German Lena. Her single “Lost in you” (#10) did the last step with a climb of one spot.

For the first time since April when Wincent Weiss debuted with “Nur ein Herzschlag entfernt” in my Top 10 there is a song which is debuting in the Top 20. It’s the song I mentioned last week. Lena debuted her song “If I wasn’t your daughter” (#20) on TV and for the first time in her career she has now two songs at the same time in my Top 20. “If I wasn’t your daughter” is only released as an acoustic version and in this song she is describing her none existing relationship with her father. For her it is definitely a deep emotional song and I really like this song. But at the moment I’m not sure if this song is staying very long on my chart.

There are two more songs debuting within my Top 50. Both songs are “caught between” this weeks greatest gainers which climbed up 20 spots. The highest of these songs is “I have questions” (#31) by former Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello. The other one is German Schlager singer Helene Fisher with “Nur mit dir” (#48). Schlager is definitely not my genre, but I can’t say why this single has gotten more airplay than most of the songs of this genre over the years. And if this song is rising as fast as in the past a spot in my Top 20 is absolutely possible which could be the first time for her since 2014 when she peaked at #12 with her monster hit “Atemlos durch die Nacht” (“Breathless through the night”). But let’s go back to the topic. The 2nd highest debut is by Rita Ora. Her song “Your song” (#36) is against my first thoughts very catchy. Then there is the debut from Austrian star Christina Stürmer. Her latest single “Du fehlst hier” (#46, “You are missing here”) got a solid start on my chart.

Other debuts are “You don’t know about me” (#60) by Ella Vos, “Clock don’t stop” (#83), “The girl you think I’m (#84) and “Mexico” (#85) by Carrie Underwood, “Echte Freunde” (#89, “Real friends”) by SDP feat. Prinz Pi and “Something different” (#98) by Why Don’t We.
