Week 737 – April 12th, 2025

This week I made a deep dive into my chart history. Mostly because there had been a new song at the #1. My new #1 really came out of nowhere. Back in 2022 German singer Nina Chuba had her first chart hit following several singles which didn’t got a chart entry. In that year she had also her first big hit with “Wildberry Lillet” (peaked at #12). Earlier this year she had her first Top 10 hits with “Fata Morgana” (peaked at #10) and “Fliegen” (“Flying”, peaked at #6). Now she did the nearly impossible on my chart after her last single “Ende” (“End”) was a flop at my chart peaking at #88. Her new single “Unsicher” (“Insecure”, #1) debuted directly at the top spot of my chart. With the first listen I knew that this will be my #1. The first two lines of the song

“Ich dacht, es wäre einfacher, Erwachsensein ist schwer
Mach‘ oft dieselben Fehler, hab‘ selten draus gelernt“

eng. “I thought it would be easier, being an adult is hard
Often make the same mistakes, rarely learnt from them”

directly caught my attention. The refrain did the last step to lift this song to the top as she sings

„Ich stolper‘ durch die große, weite Welt, ich bin so unsicher
Ich bin noch nicht so gut darin, ich leb‘ grade zum ersten Mal“

eng. “I stumble through the big, wide world, I’m so insecure
I’m not that good at it yet, I’m just living for the first time”

The song is described as the song for the Generation Z in Germany describing their emotional world, but as I’m a lot older than the target group I still have points of contact to the theme of the song. Being an adult is hard and some days are better than others and to know everything is a myth. Nearly 20 years ago I started teaching and one of my colleagues back in the days told me that after 10 years I’ve experienced everything in my school life. Now with a lot of experience I can say that’s not true – at least for me. Every now and then there are situations where I don’t know what to do and this isn’t in my professional life alone. Uncertainty is part of our lives if this in our youth, in our 20’s or for me in my 40’s. Basically Nina Chuba hit the right spots and so “Unsicher” is the first #1 debut since April 2020.

Five years ago, the last of now seven songs debuted at the top. It had been the Covid19 themed song “Ein Lied für jetzt” (“A song for now”) by German band Die Ärzte. It stayed for three weeks at the top. The first song which debuted at the top had been reggae fusion song “Explode” by Cover Drive feat. Dappy which spent six week at the top. In 2016 Anouk debuted for the third time at the top with “If I knew”. This song had the longest run at the top for a debut with eight weeks. Her other songs “You & I” (in 2014) and “Wanna little something” (also in 2016) spent four weeks at the top. “Hello” (in 2015) by Adele spent six weeks at the top.

These numbers made me look over my chart history to get a feeling for my Top 10 debuts. Since 2011 I can divide my chart into two eras. The first part between 2011 and 2017. Then second the part from 2018 to 2025. In the first part there had been a total of 40 debuts in the Top 10 with a record number of eight in 2015 and the lowest with three in 2017. Since that my chart had only seen eight debuts in the Top 10 with the highest number of two Top 10 debuts in 2019 and 2022. In 2021 and 2024 there hadn’t been any debuts in this part of the chart. This also means that “Unsicher” is the first Top 10 debut since July 2023 when Tagtraeumer did so with “Alles und mehr” (“Everything and more”). I knew that my chart changed in recent years, but this was more dramatic than I thought.

So far with the chart history. Let’s go back to this week’s Top 10. Sarah Connor’s “Heut’ is alles gut” (#2, “Today everything is okay”) dropped one spot. Holding its spot is “Was passiert” (#3, “What happens”) by ok.danke.tschüss. Down two is “Augenblick” (#4, “Moment”) by 01099. New in the Top 5 is “Crazy” (#5) by COSBY.

Former #1 “Just friends” (#6) by Leslie Clio dropped two spots and had to leave the Top 5. Directly behind is “No strings” (#7) by Absnt Mind which didn’t move. One spot down is “Anomalie” (#8, “Anomaly”) by Madeline Juno. Rounding out this week’s Top 10 is non-moving “Dear me” (#10) by Kesha.

Last week Dasha’s song “Not at this party” (#21) climbed up 51 spots. This week this song climbed up 10 spots and is again the greatest gainer of the week. Normally this information would lead to the highest debut. I’ve already dealt with this. So, let’s see which song had the 2nd best debut. There are two more songs which landed near the Top 10. The highest one is by Swiss singer Kings Elliot. Since several years she is releasing indie pop or alternative pop songs and now she managed to get a debut on my chart. Her song “Starcrossed” (#11) is a 50’s inspired song about a love which shouldn’t had been in the first place. I love this one and hope that she will not become a one-hit-wonder. For the foreseeable future I see this song fight for #1 with Nina Chuba’s “Unsicher”. There is one more song debuting in the Top 20. It is the latest single by Madeline Juno. Her song “Hab ich dir je gesagt…” (#18, “Have I ever told you…”) should reach the Top 10 soon and maybe it could reach the #1.
