Week 488 – July 4th, 2020

Another strong year for #1’s is going on. Anouk is defending the crown for now a sixth week with “I love you” (#1) and maybe this is her last week at the top. In fact a double pack by Emma is attacking the #1. Up one spot is “Luci blu” (#2, “Blue lights”) and three spots up is her album cut “Quando l'amore finisce” (#3, “When love ends”). Two songs at the podium leads to the fact that the chance is high that Emma will end up at #1 by next week. This also means that “Diagnosis” (#4) is dropping down two spots and so Alanis Morissette probably won’t be able to reach #1 with this song. Still in the Top 5 is “I dare you” (#5) by Kelly Clarkson.

The third song by Emma is knocking at the door to the Top 5. “Alibi” (#6) climbed up two spots and should join the other songs by Emma. The next song in line also climbed up two spots. For Mark Forster his 80’s inspired pop song “Übermorgen” (#7, “The day after tomorrow”) is his 2nd straight Top 10 hit this year. Down four spots and on its way out of the Top 10 is “Dance again” (#8) by Selena Gomez. These songs are followed by two Top 10 debuts. The higher ranked song is “Ein letztes Mal” (#9, “One last time”) by Elif. The other one is “Somebody” (#10) by Norwegian singer Dagny.

Over the last three weeks the award for the greatest gainer of the week went to Kygo and OneRepbulic with their song “Lose somebody” (#22). This week this song only climbed up eight spots and so the way was free for another song. Climbing up 15 spots and getting awarded is “Okay” (#30) by German singer LEA who has now three songs in the Top 30 from her album “Treppenhaus”. So let’s talk about the highest debut Two songs managed to debut within the Top 50. The highest debut is technically a song from the 1990’s. Back in 1994 British band Oasis released their debut album “Definitely maybe”. On the Japanese edition they released the song “Sad song”, but this song hasn’t been released as a regular single. So let’s move on fast forward to 2020. Liam Gallagher was part of the “MTV Unplugged” series where he sung this song too which has been released a regular single to promote this album. I definitely like this song and so “Sad song” (#41) is the highest debut in this week’s edition nearly 26 years after its first release on this Japanese edition.

The 2nd highest debut goes to 71-year-old Australian singer Daryl Braithwaite. Braithwaite had his heyday as solo singer in the early 1970’s and 1990’s when he topped the Australian charts with his songs “You’re my world” (back in 1974) and “The horses” (back in 1991). Now he returns very strong with his first single in nearly seven years. “Love songs” debuts at #50 and was originally written for Pink who is a regular guest on my chart. Some may point out that this song isn’t something for such an old guy, but I think this song fits well and why can’t older people not regret an unfulfilled love.

Other debuts are “Gone” (#84) by Liam Gallagher, “Good guys” (#85) by LANY, “Glücklicher allein” (#86, “Happier alone”) by Julia Beautx, “Worse” (#89) by New Hope Club, “Down to the water” (#90) by Maria Engås Halsne and “The last dance” (#96) – a cover of the Claire Maguire song – by Alma Agger.
