Week 527 – April 3rd, 2021

Happy easter for everyone! And welcome back to this little chart review of mine. Let's start as usual with the Top 10. Last week I had the first Olivia double pack at the Top 2. This week is no difference. Still in the lead is "OK love you bye" (#1) by Olivia Dean. It had been a tough fight between her and Olivia Rodrigo, but "OK love you bye" had the better end than "Drivers license" (#2). Next week the things could be different. Still behind this two songs is "Allein" (#3, "Alone") by Gestört Aber GeiL feat. Tina Naderer. This means that the Top 3 is holding their spots while directly behind the two songs swapped the spots. Up one spot is "Flames" (#4) by MOD Sun feat. Avril Lavigne while "Schwarz" (#5, "Black") by LEA dropped one.

The next two songs in line are by German singer Madeline Juno. Her 1st #1 smash "Über dich" (#6, "Over you") is holding its spot while "Lass mich los" (#7, "Let me go") climbed up seven spots to reach a spot in the Top 10. This Madeline Juno double is followed by the non-moving songs "I would've loved you" (#8) by Jake Hoot feat. Kelly Clarkson and "Souvenir" (#9) by Selena Gomez. Dropping three spots and rounding out this week's Top 10 is "Non c'è più musica" (#10, "There is no more music") by Mr. Rain feat. Birdy.

Last week British singer Maisie Peters stormed up the chart with her hit "John Hughes movie" (#26). This week this song also did well with an 18 spot climb. For this the song is awarded again with the greatest gainer of the week. Not far behind this one you can find the highest debut. It is by German singer Mandy Capristo. Some of you maybe know that she had been part of the band Monrose which had several hits in the early 2000's. After splitting she launched a solo career which hadn't been very successful to be honest. During the last years several German artists left the parts singing in English and released German albums and singles. Notable singers following this trend are of course Sarah Connor, Jeanette Biederman – who had several #1's on my chart with her German songs – or Madeline Juno who recently reached #1 with "Über dich". And now Mandy Capristo is following this trend. Last year she had released "13 Schritte" ("13 steps") which didn't reached my chart, but maybe this one will debut after this week's big debut. Nearly nine years after her last charting hit "Closer" (peaked at #18 in October 2012) she debuts with "Genug" (#28, "Enough"). I really like this song but it could be a little bit longer for my taste. But hey that's the trend she is also following. About these short songs there had been several articles during the last year, but interesting is that mostly unmentioned is that there had been times in the past (1950's or 1960's for example) when a lot of the big hits were also not longer than some of the actual hits. As I love Elvis Presley, thanks to my dad for playing his songs a lot when I was a little boy, I know that most of his hit songs didn't even reach the 3-minutes-mark. So the length of his first #1 "Heartbreak hotel" was only 2 minutes and 8 seconds which is 26 seconds shorter than my recent #1 "OK love you bye" Olivia Dean. And also a lot of the Beatles songs were on the short side too. Their 1st #1 hit in the UK was only 2 minutes long and their 1st #1 in the USA ("I want to hold your hand") was 2 minutes and 24 seconds. So for me are some of the arguments in these articles absolutely ridiculous, but that's only my opinion.
