Week 199 – December 20th, 2014

It has been a long journey this year before this special song “Hit my heart”. Finally Matt Cardle reached his third #1 with “Hit my heart”. This song is probable his best song so far and should outperform “Starlight” (two weeks at #1 and year-end #1 back in 2012) and “It’s only love” (one week at #1 back in 2013). On the other side there is a strong concurrence back him. First to mention is Madi Diaz although she dropped one with “Stay together” (#2). And then there is Selena Gomez. Her wonderful “The heart wants what it wants” (#3) is growing more and more on me. It’s only a matter of time when Selena Gomez will get her second #1 in my chart. Last but no least Dash Berlin feat. Roxanne Emery are also on their way up my chart with “Shelter” (#4). This piano driven song benefits most with the beautiful voice of Roxanne Emery. Personally I see this song at #1, if … . If wishes were horses, beggars would ride and “Shelter” would be #1 for weeks, but as I wrote before there is a high level of concurrence.

This level of concurrence is pushed to another level by this year’s winner of the 4th season of “The Voice of Germany”. Over the last years the winning songs of this show debuted with varying degrees of success in my chart. The first winning single has been the James Bond look-a-like song “Do you like what you see” by Ivy Quainoo. This song – her biggest hit up-to-date – debuted directly at #9 and peaked at #5 back in 2012. Although Mic Donet had to leave the show after the semi-final he did better with “Losing you” (peaked at #2) and I charted his entire album back in 2012/13. The following winner of this show had low success with their winning singles. Nick Howard’s “Unbreakable” (peaked #76 also in 2012) and stayed only four weeks which has been a little bit better than Andreas Kümmert’s winning song “Simple man” (peaked #80 and stayed four weeks in 2013). In the end Nick Howard is so far the best winner of this show as he reached my Top 10 two times this year. This year 21 year old Charley Ann Schmutzler won the show sovereign with “Blue heart” (#5) although her hardest concurrent Lina Arndt sold more copies of her song “Love in a cold room” in the first week. I really fell in love with “Blue heart” with the first listen and so she matched Ivy Quainoo’s peak in its first week and by next week it could be the best performing winner song in my chart.

Despite this lengthy review of “The Voice of Germany” I’m still within the Top 10. “Weekend” (#6) by Vérité is still a candidate for the Top 5, but it will be hard for her to reach Top 3 even though I like this fresh sound. Hilary Duff is continuing her downside trend with “All about you” (#7) as the Broods’ “Everytime” (#9). Between these former #1’s Rachel Platten’s “Fight song” (#8) is holding the spot. The Top 10 is rounded out by Ariana Grande. “One last time” (#10) is still her best performing song in my chart, but it will be hard for her to also get a spot in this part of the chart next week.

Near this week’s Top 10 the next big new entry can be found. I’m very glad I found out about this song last week. It’s “When you were mine” (#16) by Night Terrors of 1927 feat. Tegan and Sara. I knew Tegan and Sara before, but they failed to chart over the last years. Something different is it with the band Night Terrors of 1927. I’ve not heard about them before. This band has been founded back in 2012 by Jarrod Gorbel after the alternative indie rock band The Honorary Title disbanded. Night Terrors of 1927 released some songs since 2012, but after a quick listen I think these songs are not good. “When you were mine” is a different calibre which gives both acts their chart debut and a possible Top 10 hit.

Before I write something about the third highest debut in this week’s chart I’ve to expose who is this week’s greatest gainer. It’s a song from Jillette Johnsons debut album “Water in a whale” which has already given me a great joy throughout this year. “17” (#46) climbed up 28 spots after debuting last week. The third highest debut is by Heino. The most of you will ask Heino who? Heino is a German musician who sold more than 50 million copies in his career. Next year he will celebrate his 60th stage anniversary. His biggest hits from the 1970’s are “Blau blüht der Enzian” (“Blue Gentian blooming”), “Edelweiß” (“Edelweiss”) or “Die schwarze Barbara” (“The black Barbara”), but none of his singles reached #1. The first time he reached a #1 album in Germany had been back in 2013 with his cover album “Mit freundlichen Grüßen” (“Yours sincerely”) of popular German songs.

In December 2014 Heino released his latest album “Schwarz blüht der Enzian” (“Black Gentian blooming”) which has been inspired by his appearance in Wacken where he performed with Rammstein. For this album he rearranged his popular hits. This album is his first rock/metal album. The first single out of this album is the title track “Schwarz blüht der Enzian” (#56) and the cover of his biggest hit "Blau blüht der Enzian" which brought him his first chart appearance. The video to this song plays with the typical rock cliché and you can find the Who’s Who of the German Volksmusik and Schlager in the video too. Stefan Mross plays the rowdy guitarist during the gig. Schlager singer Patrick Linder plays the bass – leather jacket, black eyeliner and wild punk-hairstyle included. Schlager veteran Gotthilf Fischer (86 years old) plays the drums – sits with tattoos painted and a headband on the drums. Then the Schlager duo Judith and Mel are playing the keyboard and the second guitar. And last but not least you should’ve a closer look to the audience. There you can find the Wildecker Herzbuben with their bomber jackets and a grim face. The two Schlager heavyweights are the security personal.(Information in German) All in all the video is very well done.
