Week 411 – January 12th, 2019

Clara Mae still celebrates her #1 status with “Sorry for writing all the songs about you” (#1). I’m still not sorry about listening to this non-single. Shakira is sticking at the runner’s up spot with “Nada” (#2, “Nothing) for a 2nd week in a row. Maybe next week she could take over, but there are some more candidates for a #1 spot. One is “Tell me it’s over” (#3) by Avril Lavigne which climbed up one spot. It could be her third #1 while “Nada” could be Shakira’s first. Directly behind you can find “Nothing breaks like a heart” (#4) by Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus. For Mark Ronson it is his first Top 10 smash with his first charting appearance. Miley Cyrus already had one hit with “Wrecking ball”. This song peaked at #11 back in January 2014. Five years is a long time, but with “Nothing breaks like a heart” she proves that “Wrecking ball” is no one-hit wonder. Italian star Emma is holding the spot with “Mondiale” (#5, “World”).

Out of my Top 3 and down three spots is former #1 “I don’t love you anymore” (#6) by US indie pop band LANY. I recently bought their album “Malibu nights”. This will give them some more chart entries in the future. Changing spots are “Thank you” (#7) by Lena and “Head above water” (#8) by Avril Lavigne. These songs are followed by two new songs within my Top 10. It is no surprise that these songs did this last step. First to mention is “The less I know” (#9) by German DJ Topic. The vocals are by Swedish singer Alexander Tidebrink. For both it is their first Top 10 hit. Also for the first time in my Top 10 are Austrian DJ Parov Stelar and South African singer Nikki Williams. They reached this part of my chart with their single “Trouble” (#10).

Once more the greatest gainer of the week is “Solo” (#48) by South Korean singer Jennie. This week she shares the title with South Korean singer Jennie who also climbed up 23 spots with “Into you” (#47). This brings me to my new entries. This week’s edition sees 18 new songs. You can find a wide range of new songs, but you can devide these new entries in songs in English language and non-English language. Let’s have a closer look at the songs in English language. These are only seven songs. The highest one is an old one too. In December 2017 “So far away” (#73) by Martin Garrix & David Guetta feat. Jamie Scott & Romy Dya got its chart debut in Austria. Somehow I managed to oversee this song. Last week this song was featured prominently in a German TV series and I liked this song as much as this song got its debut this. You definitely can compare it with the late chart debut by Harry Styles’ “Sign of times” which got its chart debut late last year. The 2nd best debut song in English language is by Steps singer Claire Richards. She actually released her solo single “Shame on you” (#79). Other songs in English which got their debut are “Why her not me” (#81) by Grace Carter, “Excuses” (#86) by Olly Murs, “Best I’ll ever sing” (#88) by Maisie Peters, “Selfish heart” (#89) by HYLLS and “Favourite thing” (#99) by Fleur East.

You can divide the non-English language songs into German songs, Italian songs, K-Pop songs and Serbian songs. Let’s start with the songs in German. The highest debut is by the Switzerland duo Steiner & Madlaina. I’ve not heard about them before, but this week I discovered their single “Das schöne Leben” (#65, “The beautiful life”). I checked their other singles out, but none of these songs is as good as “Das schöne Leben”. I’m sure that this song will sprint up my chart next week. The 2nd highest German debut is by Alexa Feser. I know her since years, but “Gold reden” (#93, “Talk gold”) is her chart debut. Her actual single “Mut” (“Courage”) should debut soon. The next one is “Ein kurzes für immer” (#94, “A short forever”) by Tiemo Hauer. And last but not least Grossstadtgeflüster got the bands debut with “Feierabend” (#95, “End of work day”).

Italy is represented by Annalisa. She debuts with her single “Un domani” (#71, “Tomorrow”). On this track she is featuring Mr. Rain. “Un domani” isn’t her only debut this week. She also debuts with the album cut “Illuminami” (#72, “Enlighten me”). Then I came to the K-Pop songs. At the moment I’m charting more songs out of this genre than in the years before. This week Shaun leaves the chart with “Way back home”. On the other hand he returns with his new single “Bad habits” (#84). I like this song and the other songs on his EP “An-neyong” (“Hi”). Maybe I’m buying this K-Pop EP which could be my first EP out of this genre I’m buying. The other K-Pop song which debuts is “Gotta go” (#85) by Chung ha. She had been a member of the disbanded band I.O.I (active 2016/17). I charted them once with “Whatta man” (peak 30) back in 2016. Chung ha has released several singles since 2017 and she had more success than with I.O.I. “Gotta go” is her chart debut.

So let’s see how the first songs in Serbian do on my chart. Lately I heard some songs in Serbian when I started teaching a class (some of the students have a Serbian background). I decided to give such songs a chance and now three of the latest releases got their debut. The highest debut is “Ne sećam se” (#96, “I don’t remember”) by Milica Pavlović. She is a Swiss-born Serbian singer who recently released her 3rd album. For every song on this album she released a video and I decided to chart “Ne sećam se”. The 2nd highest Serbian debut is “Mala plava” (#97, “Little blue”) by Nataša Bekvalac & Coby. The last but not least one is “Prsten” (#98, “Ring”) by Emina Jahović & Corona & Rimski.
