Kygo & Whitney Houston – Higher love

Points: 2326.8
Peak: #1 (7)
Weeks: 21 (still charting)
Album: Golden hour
Airplay: #43
Chart Debut: August 3, 2019
First week at #1: August 31, 2019
Writer(s): Will Jennings, Steve Winwood
Producer(s): Narada Michael Walden, Kygo

Sometimes you know with the very first listen that a song will be hit. "Higher love" spent seven weeks at the top and I’m sure you guess that this song immediately did well for me. I’ve to point out that I first thought that this one is nothing interesting. It lasted nearly one and a half months before I gave this song another chance and the rest is history. The cover of cover (Whitney Houston’s version originally had been released back in 1990) spent more weeks at the top than any other song in 2019 and in total only four songs spent more weeks at the top. Normally this should lead to a clear year-end #1, but the short chart run prevented this song to do better.

Fletcher – Undrunk

Points: 2363.6
Peak: #1 (4)
Weeks: 30
Album: You ruined New York City for me EP
Airplay: #7
Chart Debut March 30, 2019
First week at #1: May 18, 2019
Writer(s): James Ho, Jeremy Dussolliet, Tim Sommers, Amy Allen, Cari Fletcher
Producer(s): Malay

Relatively unknown singer Fletcher did very well with her 1st chart appearance. Four weeks at the top and 12 weeks in the Top 10 is a landmark which other newcomers normally don’t surpass. This song is interesting, nice sung and very catchy. Although she did very well with "Undrunk" I’m not sure if she is able to repeat this success. Indicators are not good because of the fact that she is releasing singles since 2015 and just in 2019 she entered the chart and although she released some more songs in 2019 she failed to enter the chart. So I think that she’ll be a one-hit-wonder, but hopefully not.

Jeanette Biedermann – Deine Geschichten

Points: 2461.1
Peak: #1 (4)
Weeks: 29 weeks
Album: DNA
Airplay: #8
Chart Debut June 1, 2019
First week at #1: June 22, 2019
Writer(s): Jeanette Biedermann, Jörg Weisselberg, Daniel Flamm
Producer(s): Jules Kalmbacher, Daniel Flamm, Jens Schneider

The highest ranked German pop song in this list is "Deine Geschichten" ("Your stories") by Jeanette Biedermann. In this song she is dealing with the death of her father and so this is a very emotional song. It is a typical song out of the German Pop genre, but I really like this song and the song writing. Surely this song was not success, but everything that counts is that I love this one.

Avril Lavigne – Tell me it’s over

Points: 2715.2
Peak: #1 (3)
Weeks: 31
Album: Head above water
Airplay: #4
Chart Debut: December 22, 2018
First week at #1: Feburary 9, 2019
Writer(s): Avril Lavigne, Melissa Bel, Ryan Cabrera, Johan Carlsson, Justin Gray
Producer(s): John Carlson

For the 2nd time in 2019 a song by Avril Lavigne can be found in the year-end Top 10. While "I fell in love with the devil" spent one week at the Top 10 the 2nd single from "Head above water" spent three weeks at the top. This song is totally different to everything I’ve heard from her before. The sound is described as Memphis soul and as a typical R&B ballad. I’m sure if this song was sung by Ariana Grande or Selena Gomez or any other prominent R&B artist this one would have been a big hit, but so it is only a pearl for fans. I personally would appreciate when she is going more into this direction before doing more Punk Rock.

LANY – Thick and thin

Points: 2940.0
Peak: #1 (3)
Weeks: 38
Airplay: #1
Album: Malibu nights
Chart Debut: February 23, 2019
First week at #1: March 23, 2019
Writer(s): Jake Goss, Paul Klein, Alexandra Yatchenko, Nolan Lambroza
Producer(s): LANY, Mike Crossey

As there’ve been only two #1's by LANY over it only had been the question which one is going to be my year-end #1. So the answer is that "Thick and thin" failed to reach this landmark. Oh man I love their album "Malibu nights" and back in 2018 they had with "Thru these tears" another big hit (year-end #7). This year the Indie Pop breakup hymn "Thick and thin" spent three weeks at the Top 10 and was only outscored by the bands 4th official single from this album.

LANY – If you see her

Points: 3097.1
Peak: #1 (5)
Weeks: 38
Airplay: #2
Album: Malibu nights
Chart Debut: February 23, 2019
First week at #1: April 13, 2019
Writer(s): Paul Klein, Emily Schwartz, David Pramik
Producer(s): LANY, Mike Crossey, Malay

Breaking up is definitely the key theme of LANY’s "Malibu night" album. The 4th single in a row with this theme and three of these songs managed to reach a spot in my year-end review for 2018 and 2019. In the end the decision between "Thick and thin" and "If you see her" wasn’t as clear as last year’s decision when Kylie Minogue’s "Stop me from falling" won over "Zusammen" ("Together") by Die Fantastischen Vier feat. Clueso, but in the long run I preferred "If you see her" over "Thick and thin". On the other hand it is very difficult to put a particular song on the pedestal when you love the whole album as I do. In the end I’ve to write that "If you see her" won in 2019, but LANY started to be my favourite band and I still regret that I wasn’t at their concert when they had a gig in Vienna.

Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello – Señorita

Points: 2040.2
Peak: #1 (1)
Weeks: 26 (still charting)
Album: Shawn Mendes
Airplay: #14
Chart Debut: June 29, 2019
First week at #1: August 24, 2019
Writer(s): Benjamin Levin, Ali Tamposi, Jack Patterson; Shawn Mendes, Charlotte Emma Aitchison, Camila Cabello, Andrew Wotman, Magnus August Hoiberg
Producer(s): Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, Andrew Watt

Looking over international success statics Shawn Mendes’ and Camila Cabello’s hit "Señorita" shouldn’t be found on this list, because of the fact most of the time I can’t get into these massive hits. And even when I’m into such big hits they mostly have short chart runs. Therefore this is a rare thing to find a hit as "Señorita" is in such a good year-end position. I like this Latin Pop song and only the time will tell if this song is growing old in a good manor.

Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus – Nothing breaks like a heart

Points: 2174.6
Peak: #1 (2)
Weeks: 29
Album: Late night feelings
Airplay: #3
Chart Debut: December 8, 2018
First week at #2: March 2, 2019
Writer(s): Mark Ronson, Miley Cyrus, Thomas Brenneck, Maxime Picar, Clément Picard, Ilsey Juber, Conor Szymanski
Producer(s): Mark Ronson, Jamie XX

Against all odds at #9 on this list also a bigger hit in 2019 and not only a hit on my chart can be found. In at #9 is British musician Mark Ronson. For his album "Late night feelings" he teamed up with several artists. Among these has been Miley Cyrus whose work has had a lot of ups and downs over the past years. While Mark Ronson failed to impress me over the years while he had a lot of hits since the early 2000’s Miley Cyrus is mostly known for her hit single "Wrecking ball". Back in 2013/14 she peaked at #11 and this lead her to #110 on the year-end list in 2014. So "Wrecking ball" had been her biggest hit until "Nothing breaks like a heart". This is definitely not bad for artists I mostly ignore.

AVEC – Under water (club edit)

Points: 2242.5
Peak: #1 (3)
Weeks: 29
Album: Heaven/Hell
Airplay: #6
Chart Debut: February 2, 2019
First week at #1: March 2, 2019
Writer(s): AVEC
Producer(s): Tommy McLaughlin, AVEC, Andreas Häuserer

Since the start of charting again after a longer pause songs from my home country can be found on every single week. This is absolutely difficult because of that most Austrian songs didn’t get airplay on the Austrian radio shows and so I often have to dig deep to find interesting music. A good source is surely "Austrozone" on YouTube. But there are also songs which are getting airplay. One of these songs is "Under water" in the club edition. I really like this House vibe of the song and this song ended among my most played songs in 2019.

Avril Lavigne – I fell in love with the devil

Points: 2288.7
Peak: #1 (1)
Weeks: 31
Album: Head above water
Airplay: #5
Chart Debut: April 20, 2019
First week at #1: June 15, 2019
Writer(s): Avril Lavigne
Producer(s): Chris Baseford, Avril Lavigne

Well what should I say about this one. "I fell in love with the devil" is Avril Lavigne’s third #1 from her "Head above water" album. In June "I fell in love with the devil" was released as the albums 4th single. On my chart this song debuted earlier as an album cut, but in time this song reached #1. For me this is an undiscovered pearl and unfortunately it shows that her career is going to an end because she is absolutely failing to gain listeners to her music. That’s sad, but I still hope for some more good songs by her in the future.
