Week 97 – January 5th, 2013

The year 2013 stars how the year 2012 ended. With a new number one. “Between the raindrops” only lead the pack for one week. This week Lifehouse feat. Natasha Bedingfield dropped down three. The new #1 comes from Australia. It’s X-factor winner Samantha Jade with her power song “What you’ve done to me”. Still in the runner’s up position is “Receive” from Alanis Morissette. If you look at this week’s Top 5 only #1 and #4 changed the spots. Including the comeback of “Des geht si ned aus” (#10) there are two new songs in the Top 10. For the first time since 2011 Danish band The Storm returned. “Raver” (#7) climbed up five.

So “Woman down” (#15) and “Finders keepers” (#16) are no more Top 10 songs. Two weeks ago both songs were in my Top 5. So it is a rapid drop down. In the best position to reach the Top 10 is now Kelly Clarkson with “Catch my breath”. Although there is new concurrence debuting within the Top 20. Tayler Swift’s new single in Europe “I knew you were trouble” debuts at #13. This means that she actually has three songs within the Top 20. The other two songs are “Red” (#17) and “We are never ever getting back together” (#19). With the last of these songs she is climbing up the Austrian chart while “I knew you were trouble.” is a new entry in Austria.

And there are three more high new entries. One of these new entries comes from a Swiss band which had three Top 10 hits in 2011 including two in the year-end. While their first single “Low on air” (peaked at #43) flopped their new single “Angle” debuts at #24. One spot behind you find the new single from Delta Goodrem. “Wish you were here” is so far her highest charting song. And then you find the new single from Slovakian singer Celeste Buckingham. “Never be you” (#33) carried on where “Run run run” ended. Not to forget the greatest gainer of the week. It’s not for a third time “Ca$h out”. This week it’s “Holding on to you” from Twenty One Pilots.

The rest of the 13 new entries are “Eine Erinnerung (die langsam zerbricht)” (A memory which breaks slowly, #52) from Last Like Deep feat. Cornelia Mooswalder – the singer Cornelia Steinlechner left the band in Autumn, “Different” (#82) from Robbie Williams, “Die young” (#87) from Ke$ha, “DNA” (#88) form Little Mix, “Burn it down” (#89) from Ricki-Lee, “I want you back” (#90) from Noisettes, “In the photo booth” (#91) from SCHMIDT, “Trouble” (#99) from Leona Lewis and “Please don’t say you love me” from Gabrielle Aplin.

Year-End Review 2012 - Spots 5 - 1

Here it is. The final post from my year-end review of the music year 2012. Let's see which song reached #1.


5. Lana Del Rey – Blue jeans

Lana Del Rey’s domination began with her strong debut “Video games”. “Blue jeans” start began as the B-side of this single. Finally this song was chosen as single and it had a major impact for me. It’s one of a few songs which return to #1. The lyrics are good and work well with the arrangement. “I will love you till the end of time” a text line from this song describes best how I like this song.

4. Kate Voegele – Say you’re mine


If there is a song in 2012 that should have been released as an official single then it is “Say you’re mine.” With this upbeat pop tune she is doing best. This song is her second #1 on my chart and the refrain is really catching and singable. Peaking at #1 in July it made this song to one of my favorite songs during the last summer. With the later #1 “Sunshine in my sky” she is one of the most successful artists on my chart and the future of Kate Voegele is shining bright.

3. Carrie Underwood – Good girl

“Blown away” was the title of the follow up single to “Good girl”. From the very first moment I was blown away from this uptempo country rock song. Carrie Underwood isn’t a big star outside North America, but with this song she released something that could have worked in Europe too. The guitars crackle and her voice are working quite well with a singalong chorus. General this song spreads a lot of energy, not only through her singing, but also through the tempo of this song.

2. Anouk – Little did I know

Two songs are outstanding of Anouk’s last album. “What have you done” which reached #4 in the year-end of 2011 and this track. “Little did I know” had the power to stay 45 weeks on my chart, when the most songs drop out after eight or nine weeks. Three of these weeks she topped the chart in February and March. This song is about the end of a relationship is in her typical style. The arrangements work well and the end of the song sounds like from outta space. Unfortunately she didn't get the #1 spot of this review, although she fought for it for a long time, but one song did better.

1.  Matt Cardle – Starlight
And here is the #1 song of my music year 2012. With his debut album “Letters” 2010 British X-Factor winner Matt Cardle got a good start. This song debuted at #19, but it took him 12 weeks to get to the top where “Starlight” could stay for two weeks. Sure there are some songs which stayed longer at the top than this song. But I like his voice and I really like this song. The beat of this song is rousing and the guitar riffs enforce his vocal talents. Saying that female voices dominate my chart, Matt Cardle broke this domination with an easiness I never thought off. I hope that his new album will work like this song did in 2012.

Year-End Review 2012 - Spots 10 - 5

So let's star with my favorite songs of the year and count them down from 10 to 5.



10. Emma – Tra passione e lacrime

“Saró libera” from Emma was the first album in Italian I every bought. The second official single of this album “Tra passione e lacrime” (Between passion and tears) had more impact than the title song. This is the first song in Italien which peaked at #1. In April it stayed there for two weeks. And this song caused “Bello e impossibile” (Beautiful and impossible) from Gianna Nannini – a song I always sung as a child – from the Italian language favorite song.

9. Cover Drive feat. Dappy – Explode

This song has been a favorite of my #1 song of the year beside “Receive” from Alanis Morissette. The first reason why this song should have been my #1 song of the year is because it was the first track ever to debut directly at #1. And the second reason is because this song broke the record for staying at #1, where it had been six weeks. But the longtime activity of the my top songs of the year costs this one a better spot.

8. Alanis Morissette - Guardian

With “Guardian” Alanis Morissette returned to my chart where it debuted directly in the Top 10. It took her some time to reach the top spot, where she stayed for one week. This song has been a massive radio hit here in Austria. This is also the reason why this song is such a big hit on my chart. I think I hear this more than three times a day when I’m listening to the radio.

7. Pink – Blow me (one last kiss)

After the greatest hits album Pink released in 2012 a new album, which I finally bought last week. The first single had been “Blow me (one last kiss)”. This uptempo pop song is typical for Pink. I always liked her singles in this style. And this one is no exception. The unexpected #1 “Run run run” from Celeste Buckingham prevented this song for staying longer than two weeks at the top.

6. Krautschädl – Khoids Wossa


Originally released in 2011 this song has been a massive hit for me in 2012. This rock ballade has very deep lyrics. For those who don’t speak German you can compare this song with “Lost in you” from Three Days Grace, a song which reached #6 in my year-end of 2011. Beside Stef Lang’s “Paper doll” this one of the most underrated songs of the year. It’s such a shame that this song didn’t get attention on the Austrian radio stations.

Year-End Review 2012 - Spots 20 - 11

Twenty songs to go. Here are spots 20 until 11.


20. Celeste Buckingham – Run run run 

Celeste Buckingham is a Slovakian singer with a Swiss mum and an American dad. She also was a participant in “Czech & Slovakia SuperStar”. “Run run run” was one of her singles from her debut album. As well as in Czech and Slovak this song received a lot of airplay. It took this song only two weeks before topping my chart. Not many songs are in a position to do this. “Run run run” is one of my summer hits in 2012.

19. Jennifer Rostock – Ich kann nicht mehr

The German rock band Jennifer Rostock released this single in 2011. As a carryover this song finally reached the #1 in January. It has been the first song in German reaching this position. Later it was followed by an Austrian band with a German song. This song has very deep lyrics and is my favorite song from this band, because their previous work hasn’t impressed me as much as this song did.

18. Emma – Senza averti mai

Three songs from Emma reached the Top 30. This song is the only song of her which didn’t get up to #1. “Senza averti mai” one of the outstanding songs from her album “Saró libera” which I bought after the first listen of “Non e’ l’inferno”. “Non e’ l’inferno“ is the next song from her on the list.

17. The Brilliant Things – Dance

Although this song had airplay on the British radio stations it failed to chart. On my chart it did pretty well. Here it reached #1 in Mai 2012. The first time I listened to this song I thought that Irish band The Corrs had new material. This time it was another Irish band. “Dance” is similar to The Corrs’ hit “Radio” which is a favorite of mine. At the moment The Brilliant Things are a one hit wonder and I’m not sure if they will have a future hit on my chart.


16. Silbermond – Himmel auf

As I heard that a new Silbermond album got released in 2012 I was very excited. They are among my favorite German bands. The first single “Himmel auf” is a quite good track in the tradition of their other work. The whole album is disappointing for me. It sounds more than a new Coldplay album than a Silbermond. Nothing against Coldplay, but this isn’t most of the time my music. In the end “Himmel auf” is the only track I charted from the new Silbermond album so far.

15. Kelly Clarkson – What doesn’t kill you (stronger)

For the last time in this review you find a song from Kelly Clarkson In the year-end review of 2011 this song only reached #101. In 2012 it did better with a peak at #1 and a year-end finish at #15. The carryover prevented this song for reaching my Top 10 of the year.

14. Taylor Swift – We are never ever getting back together

From “Our song” to “We are never ever getting back together” it has been a long way. This breakup song has come to my mind very fast. On my chart it has been Tayler Swift’s first Top 10 hit and her first #1. “WANEGBT” is still in my Top 20 were it could be for a long time, because this song finally got airplay in Austria too and it is climbing up the Austrian chart. Maybe it’s her first Top 10 hit in Austria too, but her latest smash hit “I knew you were trouble.” is also starting to chart.
 
13. Jessie J. – Domino

This song took some time, but when I started to listen it had my attention. By February it reached the top of my chart and stayed there for two weeks holding off Lana Del Rey which tried to reach her second #1. “Domino” is a catchy tune and I think it’s her best. I like “Price tag”, but this one is special.

12. Emma – Non e’ l’inferno

Emma for the third time. With this song I’m sharing memories of my first trip to Rome in Mai 2011. And this song had been the reason why I bought her album. Nevertheless “Non e’ l’inferno“ only spent one week at the top.

11. Stef Lang – Paper doll

“Paper doll” did well on other personal charts before. “I don’t wanna be a paper doll” is the key of this song. The video fits the theme of this song very well. Beside “Little talks” from Of Monsters and Men and “Black fly” from Lindi Ortega it’s one of the best videos in 2012. Unfortunately Stef Lang got little attention on personal charts. This song would have certainly deserves more public attention.

Year-End Review 2012 - Spots 30 - 21

And her are the results for the spots 30 to 21.

30. Cœur de Pirate – Golden baby

With “Golden baby” Canadian Cœur de Pirate celebrates her biggest hit on my chart. It took her almost three months to climb to the peak at #5. This song is more in the style of her self-titled debut album which I absolutely love.

29. Alanis Morissette – Receive

At #29 you find the song which should have been the #1 song in my year-end review. Eight consecutive weeks at the top are a new record. Only in my first charting area one song (I’ll be missing you by Puff Daddy) could stay longer at the top than this song. I think this is one of her best songs for ages.

 28. Lana Del Rey – Video games

“Video games” is the 3rd song of Lana Del Rey in this countdown. In the end of 2011 it topped the chart for four weeks which lead her to #62 in the year-end review 2011. As a carryover this song continued the good run in 2012 and now her breakout can be found at #28. One of her songs comes later. We will see where “Blue Jeans” will end.

27. Kelly Clarkson – I forgive you

“I forgive you” is one of Kelly Clarkson’s Top 3 this. In April this song climbed to its peaked. Two of her songs are still be missed in this countdown. “Dark side” and naturally her #1 hit “What doesn’t kill you (stronger)” are on the list with one to come in this part of the review. 

26. Parade – Light me up

With a freebie this British girl group climbed into my weekly Top 3. They will ever be in my history books as the first girl group reaching this part of my chart. It has been a favorite of mine since the first listen to this song. This time I also liked the dubstep in the middle of the song which I normally don’t like. If they always release such songs their future is shining bright on my chart.
  
25.  Emma – Cercavo amore

The first song I heard from Emma has been a cooperation with the Italian rock band Modá. I didn’t like this song. The title track of this album “Saró libera” was only a miner hit on my chart. I didn’t see it coming that Emma end with four hits in my Top 30 of the year. This one is lowest, but absolutely good. As I like the whole album.

24. Mic Donet – Losing you

“The Voice of Germany” helped his career taking the next step. “Losing you” was his first song in English and released before the final. Unfortunately his coach went with another guy. From the very first time heard this song, I didn’t saw his whole appearance in the show with this song, I liked it. This song ended as #2 and is one of a few songs this year which didn’t reach #1 after staying in the runner’s up position.

23. Kate Voegele – Sunshine in my sky

Her is the next song from Kate Voegele. “Sunshine in my sky” is her third #1 hit on my chart following to “Say you’re mine” (this song will rank very high, but more later). This song is one of my favorites of this album. And when I gave this album the first listen it was the song I liked most, but at the end one song of this album did better for me. 

22. Kelly Clarkson – Dark side

“Dark side” is the second best Kelly Clarkson song in 2012 for me. With a good melody and lyrics this has been a very strong third official single of her album. However it wasn’t enough to get her one more #1. I can’t say why, but it is not simply assumed, but it is still a good track. 

21. Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen – Good time

It’s always a good time. A “Good time” listening to this song. Owl City has been considered as a one hit wonder after the massive hit of “Fireflies” which is still my favorite of Owl City. And Carly Rae Jepsen wasn’t near a one hit wonder as she has now two big hits outside her home country. On my chart this is for both acts their biggest hit up to date. I’m sure both acts will have some more in the future.

Year-End Review 2012 - Spots 40 - 31

Let's continue the countdown with the sports 40 to 31.


40. Ivy Quainoo – Do you like what you see

Ivy Quainoo won the first season of “The Voice of Germany”. With her winning title, a song that could easily be a bond song, she shot straight into the Top 10. Her concurrent Mic Donet debuted at #10 and went to #2. Although she didn’t reach #1 she had a respectable start of her career.

39. Demi Lovato – Give your heart a break

In 2011 she finished at #63 with “Skyscraper”. This time she climbed up the chart with “Give your heart a break” peaking at #7. So far it’s her best song up to date. Kinda sad that her best songs didn’t work in Europe.

38. Anouk – What have you done

This song was a massive hit on my chart. In 2011 “What have you done” finished at #4 in my year-end review. This year she is back among my Top 40 songs without staying a single week within the Top 10 in 2012, but with 30 charting weeks of her 52 weeks in total she has set a record. This record she is sharing with Adele who stayed also for 52 weeks in my chart with “Turning tables” and “Set fire to the rain”.

37. Miriam Bryant – Finders keepers

Somehow unimpressive had been my first listen to this song. That changed very fast. Miriam Bryant has a voice like Adele. The talent is there, but apart from a brief appearance in the German chart for a single week she didn’t has the same success like Adele.

36. Mia. – Fallschirm

I didn’t expect much of this release of German band Mia.. Their lyrical style is sometimes difficult to understand. This time they got me caught for three reasons. First the clapping part which made this song unique. Second the refrain which is absolutely singable for me. And last but not least the lyrics. For sure the video also helped.

35. Mic Donet – Pray 4 rain

His performences in “The Voice of Germany” helped him to get my attention. He had worked on his album for several years and finally this TV show helped to get it released. “Pray 4 rain” is no official single, but on my chart it was his second Top 5 hit. His first, “Losing you”, can be found on a better position.

34. Kate Voegele – Impatient girl

Here she is again. ”Impatient girl” is the first of two songs from her in this part of the countdown. This song has a good hook and all in all this song had everything to be her next #1. Indeed she peaked at #4, because there had been stronger songs out there and her song “Sunshine in my sky” peaked at #1 during the same period. A #35 finish in the year-end is still pretty good. 

33. Chris Wallace – Remember when (push rewind)

Have I heard from Chris Wallace before 2012? No I haven’t. At first I didn’t realized how good this song is. Then this song went higher on other personal charts and I gave this song a chance. The end is known. Chris Wallace peaked at #3 with a massive hit in his bag. 

32. Kate Voegele – Burning the harbor

“Burning the harbor” is the next song from Kate Voegele. Somehow I also have the feeling that this song could have reached #1 if … If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. “Burning the harbor” peaked at #4 and did pretty well on this review too.

31. Of Monsters and Men – Little talks

What a song! Only peaking at #9 on my chart. This song was nearly everywhere her in Austria. The video of this song is still great. I absolutely love it. Only one song outside my weekly Top 5 charted higher than this song. You will find this song in the next part of the countdown. 
 

Year-End Review 2012 - Spots 50 - 41

This time you can find a lot of unknown artists between 50 and 41.


50. Kelly Clarkson – You love me

Once again a song of my favorite artist of 2012. This time it is “You love me” which reached the highest position in August. Three more songs are on the list from her like “Dark side” or “What doesn’t kill you (stronger)”.

49. Ricki-Lee – Raining diamonds

In Europe Ricki-Lee is totally unknown. With “Raining diamonds” she had the chance to chart, but on the basis of missing promotion I’m among a few people who like this song here.

48. Jack’s Mannequin – Release me

In 2011 Jack’s Mannequin entered #1 with the beautiful song “My racing thoughts”. The second single of their album “People and things” also reached the Top 10, but in the end this song failed to get higher than #9.

47. Christina Aguilera – Your body

With "Your body" Christina Aguilera returned to the top of my chart like in my first periode of charting. Sure “Your body” failed to make it to #1, but a place at the podium is still good, because a lot of her songs failed to get my attention in the past.

46. Shary-An – Read my book

Shary-An was a participant in the first season of the “Voice of Holland”. From her debut album she released several singles before she charted on my chart for the first time. “Read my book” has a good and catchy refrain. Unfortunately her other material isn’t as good as this song.

45. Suzie McNeil – Tough love

Suzie McNeil is on my list since she released “Merry go round” in 2011. With “Though love” she is the first artist on this list who reached the 1000 point mark.

44. Joe Bonamassa – Driving towards the daylight

Joe Bonamassa is a also a member of Black Country Communion who also released a new album in 2012. “Driving towards the daylight” got my attention as it was played on TV. This is the first of two freebie songs in a row which relatively fast entered the Top 10 in June.

43. Noisettes – Winner

The next freebie on the list is “Winner”. This song has been released right before the start of the Olympic Games in London. From the Austrian point of view I better forget how these games ended. “Winner” is a up-tempo dance song which reached its peak in August.

42. Wonder Girls feat. Akon – Like money

And her is the best song from a Korean band. The Wonder Girls cooperated with Akon and they made all right (for me). In South Korea they failed to reach #1 like with most of their Korean singles before.

41. The Orion Experience – NYC girl

And here is once again an unknown artist. An absolutely interesting song from this group. This song peaked at #5 in February. Later in 2012 “NYC girl” got covered by Ronan Keating for his first album “Fires” after six years.
