Week 203 – January 17th, 2015

Edition 203 is a special week. No less than 18 new entries characterize this week which is a new record. 18 new entries are two more than in the previous record. Although there are these massive debuts none of these songs entered my Top 10. So Selena Gomez stayed at the top with her sentimental song “The heart wants what it wants” (#1) for a 2nd week. German Charley Ann Schmutzler climbed up one spot with “Blue heart” (#2). Now the winning song from the “Voice of Germany” is at the runners-up position and the chance is high that my chart will see a first #1 from this show. Charley Ann Schmutzler put Selena Gomez under pressure, but she isn’t the only one while Matt Cardle’s “Hit my heart” (#3) dropped another spot this week. “Shelter” (#4) by Dash Berlin feat. Roxanne Emery climbed back to the previous spot. The former Top 10 debut “Shelter” isn’t giving up for reaching #1. And of course there are this week’s top debuts which all want to reach #1. And finally Taylor Swift reached with a climb of one spot the Top 5 with “Blank space” (#5). “Blank space” is in its 9th week, but you better shouldn’t write her off too.

The Top 6 is opened with the only new song in the Top 10 this week. It’s another song by Jillette Johnson. “17” (#6) climbed up five spots and brings her the 7th Top 10 hit from her debut album. This song is another personal song by her which is growing more and more on me. Last week “17” had been nearly my most played song and I think Jillette Johnson can continue this run. “17” could be her next #1 on my chart. On its way down is “Stay together” (#7) by Madi Diaz. After nine weeks “Stay together” is for the first time not in my Top 5. “When you were” (#8) by Night Terrors of 1927 feat. Tegan and Sara which climbed up one spot and changed the spot with Kate Voegele’s “Just watch me” (#9) is doing better. The Top 10 is rounded out by Selah Sue’s “Alone” (#10).

The end of the Top 10 leads me directly to this week’s highest new entry. I always listened more to female artists than to male ones. Apart from some exceptions like Matt Cardle, Ben Montague or Mic Donet – I apologize by those male artists I didn’t mention – male singers have it very hard. Generally my Top 10 refers to this fact and this week’s highest new entry is no exception (I think next will approve this fact too). Over Ella Henderson’s performance in “Schlag den Raab” I discovered her latest single “Mirror man” which I didn’t chart this week what doesn’t mean I will never chart this song. But “Mirror man” lead me to her previous single “Yours” (#57) which debuted outside the Top 50 and to Jessie Ware. I’ve known Jessie Ware’s single “Say you love me” (#12) before, but because I don’t like her previous work I didn’t pay much attention to this song. Therefore I oversaw this beautiful gem last autumn, but when I gave this song a chance it unfolded its brilliance in its simplicity. “Say you love me” absolutely works for me and I can’t understand why I didn’t charted this song in the past.

Three spots behind Jessie Ware the next new entry from the UK can be found. It’s a song by another female artist, but other than Jessie Ware Ellie Goulding had a big hit on my chart with “Burn” back in 2013. Her latest smash “Love me like you do” (#15) is from the soundtrack of “Fifty shades of grey”. Similar to “Say you love me” I think that this song is brilliant. This time it could be the big hit for Ellie Goulding. The next week’s will show, but I expect much from this song. If "Love me like you do" reaches #1 it would be the first Soundtrack #1 on my chart. Near to these new entries the greatest gainer of the week can be found. Due to the fact that there are 18 new entries this week this week’s greatest gainer is a low climber. “Habits (stay high)” by Swedish singer Tove Lo only climbed up eight spots. As no other song climbed more this week “Habits (stay high)” is the greatest gainer with the lowest climb I can remember to win this award.

Within the Top 40 there are four more new entries. The teen pop song “Wish for you” (#35) by Norwegian newcomer Raylee is leading this pack of new entries. “Wish for you” is fresh, danceable and has a very remarkable refrain, so Raylee could be found much higher next week. “Wish for you” is followed by “Dimenticare (mai)” (“Forget (never)”, #37) by Raige feat. Annalise. While Annalise had some minor hits on my chart before this is the first hit for Raige who put “Dimenticare” as a solo version on his album. Then there is US newbie Zella Day. I first heard about “1965” (#38) last week when Bryan charted this song. Because he dropped it this week it will definitely do better for me than for him. And last but no least I gave “Criminal” (#39) another listen. It finally profited and debuted within the Top 40.
