Week 306 – January 7th, 2017

It has been clear for me that there will soon be a change at the top of my chart. This week US indie pop band Coin took over with there smash “Talk too much” (#1). It is the first time since December 2015 when Austrian band Tagtraeumer reached #1 with “Nichts” (“Nothing”) that a male band is topping my chart. Between these #1’s only Max Mutzke and Wiz Khalifa represent male artists at #1 on my chart, but these two male singers where only featured on these tracks. Now in the runner’s up position is Kelly Clarkson with “Nostalgic”. And still at the podium is Anouk’s “If I knew” (#3). Sprinting up in the Top 10 is “Alcohol” (#4). Shannon LaBrie’s song climbed up five spots. The last but not least song in my Top 5 is another song by Anouk. “Not a lovesong” (#5) dropped one spot.

The next part of my Top 10 is opened with Carrie Underwood’s “Dirty laundry” (#6) which hold its spot. Up one spot is Kate Voegele with “Free & wild” (#7). This song is followed by the 3rd Anouk song in my Top 10. “Be my baby” dropped three spots. The only new song in my Top 10 is “Somebody else’s lover” (#9) by Juliette Claire. With this song there are now four songs from the Netherlands in my Top 10. The Top 10 is rounded out with “Für immer” (#10, “For always”) by German act Glasperlenspiel.

Anouk has now three songs in my Top 10 and another one at #13. “Wanna little something” is now the 4th highest song of eight (!) songs by her on my chart. The last songs of the “Queen for a day” album (four and not my mentioned five songs) got their debut. The highest debut of these last album cuts is “Keeps getting better” (#30) which is followed by “Castles in the air” (#31), “Right on time” (#32) and “We are” (#33).

The highest debut by an official single is by a German Hip Hop girl band. SXTN is from Berlin and was founded by two girls with an immigration background. Their first single “Deine Mutter” (“Your mother”) was released in November 2015, but failed to enter my chart. In the song and the video they are working with the typical Hip Hop clichés as an FAZ article pointed out (The described clichés in the video are foam party with naked women, excessive twerking and some more.). A US Hip Hop act would have had a massive hit with such a song, but as I’m not into such songs I wasn’t impressed.

Their next single also flopped, but their 3rd one “Ich bin Schwarz” (“I’m black”) got its debut. This single was released in September, but I discovered it this week. There have been several singles with this theme back in 2015. The first I’ve noticed was by Ah Nice who is a German comedian/singer. He worked out the problems between black and white people with very clever lyrics. When I discovered this song in 2016 I was impressed by the lyrics on the one hand. On the other hand musically I wasn’t impressed and in general this song failed to enter my Top 100. Another song with this theme was released by Leila Akinyi. Her debut single “Afro Spartana” (“Afro Spartan”) also flopped for me. So only the Hip Hop track by SXTN got its debut. Although the lyrics aren’t as clever as by Ah Nice I really appreciate their directness and I absolutely love the beat of the song.

Other debuts are “Loved by you” (#83) by POWERS, “What if” (#90) by Tokio Hotel, “Love don’t break me” (#93) by Billy, “Dancing on the sun” (#94) by Bahari and “Something else” (#96) by I Am Harlequin.
